I am selecting trees for our yard, which was analyzed as alkaline and clay. What would grow well in this? I am most interested in maple trees, any types that would do well in this soil?

well red maples up here in the adirondack seem to grow in all the "bad" soils from the outwash to the swamps. they are pretty tolerant to harsh areas.

Actualy Acre rubra does not like high pH. It will become chlorotic. We donot see it too much here in the MKE WI area.

Bur and swamp white oak will do well. Red, white and pin will not.

Sugar maple wont do as well either, but silver and norway will do ok.

The big question is how high the pH realy is. if it is 7.5 then many trees will do. But if it is over 8, the pack has narrowed quite a bit.

Maybe this is one for Tom Dunlap. He is in the Twun Cities.
