Sir, We recently bought 10 acres in Arkansas. We will be building a home there. I would like to know what kind of fruit trees I could start an orchard with in that area (Little Rock) that would do nicely. What would be a fairly quick growing shade tree that would do well there? We presently live in California , so we are not familiar with anything back there. Help Please.

when you get to Little Rock, check out the local nurseries or garden centers. They will have the trees that will be suitable for the area. you will probably be in plant hardiness zone 6 or 7 which there is a wide variety of plant to choose from. john

Talk with the local Extension Agent about what grows well & potential markets. No point in growing something there's already 100 folks doing unless you have a plan to beat them at selling somehow. Look in used bookstores for "Organic Orcharding" by Gene Logsdon, an old book from the Organic Gardening magazine folks but a good primer.
