On that note, how do you seal up cracks that are visible in the house? Clear silicone? My fireplace has a few gaps around the edges and was just thinking how I would fill them so it would look OK

I hired a contractor to do the work in my house and they used that expanding foam for the attic to seal the tops of the drywall seems and box sills.

For your issue I would think any kind of calk that can fill in the gaps would work. The wife would probably like it to color match and not look terrible.
