Can you get it to 2 stroke out of the cut? I doubt you can with the governor in that carb.

You have to set it in the wood. Set it till its still 4 stroking in the wood and then back it down till it quits.

Some of the later production sand cast Poulans did not have a governor on them. My 71A is an example. Yours on the other hand does have one. I have seen a lot of the paddles on the governors nipped off as well. It is really hard to tell how your saw is set because of the sound quality. I always set them as I am cutting. Also, no washer in between the retaining ring and the sprocket.

Your talking about the air vain governor correct? I was talking about the governor on the Tilly HL itself.

Your 71-A still has that.

I take the shafts and other miscellaneous parts out of the governed hl carbs and put them in the older style that had the vein governor.

Some of the service manuls I have state that at least some models have a governor in the HL carb for a backup system even if they were equipped with a air vain governor.

I follow what your saying you done to your 71-A but the way you put it it made it sound like all the later sand cast saws did not have a governor at all and I don't think that is correct.

I'm not disputing, just asking, I'm not above learning.

I know what you are saying. From what I have found some of the newer style saws without the vein governor did not have a governor at all. More than likely over the years some shop had replaced the carb and the replacement did not have it. Poulan sometimes changed a lot of things on their saws and it is really hard to tell what their standard was. I do believe they changed the pistons in the super 72 three different times. They were constantly improving their models especially the pro grade sand cast models.

I didn't try to get it to 2 stroke out of the cut. i did what you said. when i first put it in the wood it 4 stroked a little gave the carb another 1/32 or so in and it stopped 4 stroking. so i guess it's set right. i'll put a new chain and sprocket and see how it runs then. i'm not gonna use it much. i just wanna keep it in good running order.

Also according to Acres this saw made in 68-70, my local saw shop says 56-64. anyone know which is correct?

I say mid 60's to around 70 is about right. The saw has the old cream color paint so that tells me mid 60's. In the late 50's and very early 60's they did not see much paint at all.
