What kind of tree was this?

See pics and fire away! It was dead and just fell in my yard, so I cut it up and am burning it already. Very dry considering it was just standing. It is fairly dense, burns hot, but doesn't produce much in the way of coals.

Sassafras. Dig up some of the root and it will smell like Root Beer.

It smells like Elmer's glue when split. Maybe a hint of black licorice too...
