What's eating this tree?

Went to inspect some land I'm contemplating buying, and I noticed about 30 tree's with this ailment/disease...it was more pronounced on some than others, but very noticeable.

Any ideas what this is? T
This is a young black locust.

For some reason, it almost looks like gunshot wounds. Haven't seen this in my area.

It's funny buzz said "gunshot wounds". Nectria canker is commonly called “target” canker, it looks similar to your pics. Need a better photo to be sure.

Did a little google search and found similar photos under Nectria canker.

Yep...I did the same and some of them are almost identical.
