Why are there different chain saw bars? some straight-some with a loop?

Bow saws are old skool but that's as much as I know, I think they were a lot more dangerous

We use to use bow bars back in the 70's to cut brush on the firelines. You would just push it into the thick brush. I didn't like them much, they would throw chains a lot and were heavy.
