I need to plant some windbreakers down the western side of our property as the wind usually blows in from the west. I have considered Black Hills Spruce or Austrian Pine. We have open farm fields around us and the wind blow so hard in the winter that we have to undo our porch swing to keep it from slamming into the house:). Its about a 400 foot or a little more line where I need to plant. Any suggestions?

A mix f evergreens that are suited for the location. Dont go for individual appeal of the speices.

You can use deciduouse plants too, once again mix them up to reduce chances of pests damaging the whole row. With decid. trees you can employ coppicing to manage the row for optimal hight.

plant in a stagered row...

Here is a search i did on wind breaks a while back that has some very good hits. At least one has a formula for hight and distance for effecacy.
