winter protection/jap maple

Hi, I have a question regarding my crimson jap maple. We planted in late April of this year, it faces west with some shade, and I was curious to know if I should protect from the harsh winter weather, what materials to use, etc. We live in southeastern Michigan, zone 5. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Burlap

Drive some stakes in around it and wrap them with burlap.
