With some of these wild guesses going on here and in virtually every other tree id thread, I'm just going to say some sort of "evergreen":)

Bark looks like black locust, wood looks like box elder.
Put a small split near the stove until it dries out. If it's still heavy when dry, burn it when it's cold out next year. If it floats out of your hand when dry, burn it when it's not so cold outside. Win/win.
