Wood ID help??? Black Locust??

Was pruning what at first thought was a type of willow today, heartwood is dark in color,sapwood light in color. Heavy wood. Coarse bark with relatively deep furrows. young branches are smooth with light grayish bark. small buds, alternate growth. Tree is about 50 ft tall. about 30-36" base .

Looks like black walnut to me.

it has a distinct fragrance when i chop at the heartwood.

Does it smell like aspirin? Or a goody powder?

+1 on the black walnut. You can tell by the outer white ring surrounding the darker grain.

i don't particularly know what aspirin smells like, don't imagine it smells like this.
will be back in the neighborhood tomorrow and will take a picture of the tree for you guys.

I've never noticed any distinct smells when cutting black walnut. It might be the moss he is smelling. The bark looks to be covered with it.

while the end grain looks similar, that tree seems to have been rotten, may affect heartwood color.

bark is very similar.
