I'm green and I have questions.... I guess first up is what saw do I actually have? I was fortunate enough to come into what is I believe a Stihl 440. The serial number (or so I think) is 160988571. Ive been using wood heat for several years but have always bought the cut ends (for cheap) from the local mill and supplemented by cutting wood. Last year, after I got this saw, Any info I can get on this saw will be greatly appreciated. It's a good, strong saw and I want to be able to keep it in top shape. Thanks y'all

Find a casting number on any part and post it here. They usually start with the 4 digits of the model line.

If it says 1128, you're in the 044/046/440/460 family.

A lot of guys here can ID just by looks though. I can't.

You guys with the sarcastic posts seem to have forgotten that you too once started out with one post.

It's just so hard to ignore the 98% of the "Brush ape" new accounts that start with the same trolling tones and ask the same trolling questions. Shame this site has the entire participating membership on "Ape Alert" . It's almost as if a new member has to be "vetted" ...(oh wait...that's what most forums do...never mind....)

I'll just crawl back under my sarcastic boulder and post less. But it does seem as though we covered a few of his questions so far.

The initial hook thrown out for the B.A. was fairly subtle, and creative too. If the o.p. isn't the applicable primate, he probably will just wonder a) what exactly a brush ape is, and b) what do volkswagens have to do with it.

Good luck & stay safe o.p., there is a lot of good info here.

Thanks for the info y'all. Just want to figure out what saw I have so I can keep it good working order and learn in the process. I know you all have seen these questions 1000 times before. A little sarcasm and a bit of a hard time never killed nobody.

Are there any particular threads that you guys remember off the top of your heads that you think would he good for me to read? Ive spent most of the day lurking reading up on routine maintenance. This place is chock full of useful advice for newbies like me. Last year was the first year I cut my own wood and was also the first time I'd used a good chainsaw. I was hooked with the first cut. It's raining pretty good all day hear so I talked the ol' lady into letting me cut windows in the horse stalls just so I could crank up the saw. I will say that I don't know that I really should have joined this site.....I was hooked before and after a day or two on here you guys already have me wanting a dual port and have the suckered tuned.... And it's already way more saw than I'll ever need. Until the need for a shiny new saw burrows it's way into my head

Oh and as far as 27 brush apes fitting in a Volkswagen if you run them through a chipper, I was wondering if y'all had thought of double running them through and trying for 35 or even 40?
