Try putting the piston in facing the right way, looks like ring ends in a exhaust port to me.

Could have been using a metal piston stop as well.
The hole in the piston has been burnt through, he was cutting fence posts when it stopped

I'm not the most observant guy in the world, but I think it's pretty clear that a hole in the piston is the problem.
The owner marked the piston before removing it, I've just cleaned the carbon off and yep, the arrow is pointing the right way.

Wrong plug, got too hot too quick. Detonation.
Do you see the tiny droplets of aluminum on top of the piston? That's from the inside of the combustion chamber. You should be able to see really bright aluminum droplets on the inside of the chamber and vica-versa.

+1 on the detonation theory.
Having another look a the aftermarket Golf piston the saw was running when it stopped the second time ( braking the transfer bridge) I'd say it was too tight to start with ie: not enough piston to cylinder clearance.

Holes seem to create more problems or issue then they solve.
