Would you drive 300 miles each way for a $450 066?

Got somebody holding an 066 for me if I decide I want it. In supposedly great condition. If he has to ship it, I think he'll avoid the hassle and sell it locally. Will get pics tommorrow.

The price is good but not good enough for me to justify that much time in the car.
Not to mention "supposedly great condition" does not always end up that way. It could have a bad piston or air leak or another hard to find problem, and you've drove all that way and end up buying a saw you have to put alot of work into.
Tough call........

My Local pawn shop has an 066 for 450, an 064 for 350, and another stihl, cant remember, but it was 275. I know I could twist there arm a bit, So only if I felt the need for a road trip, and didn't really care if I liked what I saw (no pun intended) when I got there. I get 20mpg, 600 miles = 30 galons x 4.30 per galon = 130.00 + lunch and maybe dinner on the road. But there is no better excuse to not get nothing done for the day than going to get a new saw, so Ya, I'd do it.

   :D

Id probably do it. Tell wife we were going for ride sightseeing. You got to eat whether your home or not so your just paying for gas in my opinion.:)

If you're looking to resell it and make a buck I wouldn't do it, but if you want it for personal use I'd do it.

Nope, and I have a car that gets 50 mpg! That's about an 11 to 12 hour trip, I have better things to do with my time. Now if the price was $250 I'd reconsider...

What kinda car gets 50 mpg? Must be a down hill only type thing.

Just fishin'

VW Jetta TDI (diesel), it gets about >50 mpg if you keep it below 75 mph on the hwy. It still gets about 48 mpg traveling at 75-80 mph. It should pass the 300,000 mile mark within the next month or two. I bought it when it was 3 years old and had 100k on the clock, picked it up for $6500. The best money I've ever spent on a car! It's had stoves, 80 gal water tanks, and a sh!t-load of lumber & cement blocks in it... it's a lot cheaper to drive it rather than the full size diesel whenever possible.

It's certainly not a deal made in heaven if you have to drive 600 miles to make it happen. If I really NEEDED a big chainsaw (I don't) and I wasn't doing anything (never happens), and I really trusted the guy regarding the condition of the saw (maybe), I might consider it.

I'm cheap, though. I don't much like dropping $450 on a chainsaw. I usually figure out how to do it cheaper.

Got any friends in the area???

I have bought a few saws from people that distance away, but I had friends in the area that could go by and check it out for me, pay for it and hold it until picking it up was convenient. That is one of the benefits of being in the national guard.

Do you trust this guy enough, or want this saw enough to buy it without physically seeing it??? Does the greyhound bus run between you and him??? I have bought tractor parts from a place that ships them by greyhound. It's relatively cheap and you meet the bus just like you were picking someone up. They may not do that anymore but it is something to think about.

Of course, the bottom line is "Do you reeeeeeaaaaallllllyyyy want the saw" and if you want it that bad, get in the car and drive, never look back.

Good luck

If you factor in the cost of gas, you're probably at $550+ for it. If you REALLY want an 066, post a wanted ad on CL. You can probably find a decent 066 locally for $550, and not waste a day of time getting it. Remember, they build TRUCKLOADS of these saws every day. One will come along.

I've been known to make long drives to look at something just for the fun of it. It's doubtful I would go 300 miles for a saw though, even if it were $250. Time is a precious commodity for me right now.

Now, if you were talking about a good saw like a 394 or a 372. . .
