What would be wrong with this saw once I gave it a new spark plug, filter, filter cover, bar, clutch cover, gas tank, new plastic covers, and sprocket? I know thats alot, but wouldn't it be worth it?

that saw you found on ebay seriously looks hammered.....till you get a bid in and figure shipping, your over 100 and then theres still 3 days to go

I actually got mine 044 from here on the site. Turned out it was an arctic model that need a piston. The saw needed serious cleaning but after a piston and cleaned jug, it runs like a champ. I would have had a good runner for less than $200 if I didn't try out the BB kit. It's a great saw to learn how to build and rebuild one. Easy and parts are abundant. Jump on one if you see one for sale.

Part of whats wrong is 105 # compression. That sounds like P/C replacement, minimum.

If you can get it for the price where its at, I would buy it but after rebuild and parts, you'll spend good bit of penny.

The saw does have DP over on it though. :greenchainsaw:

what do you mean by DP?

The DP cover gives you an extra exhaust outlet which is good for HP. You should search DP cover and 044 on this forum. There are alot of good info here.

The 044`s and MS440`s I consider to be my most favorite saws, they are worth doing quite extensive rebuilds on in my opinion. The hardest part is to find them for a decent price and what they require to be put in good running condition. I pass on a lot of the saws that come up for sale but this year I have found and purchased 5 of the 044-MS440 series saws. Got three running saws+a parts saw for $175.00 Cdn. in one lot and paid $75.00 apiece for the two MS440`s . By doing some horse trading and some repair work for parts swap I have 5 good running saws that average out at less than $200. a piece.I am currently rebuilding the one part saw that came with the first lot of saws and it will cost around $250. by the time its complete. I don`t count in my labor on these rebuilds because it is my hobby or labor of love, there is considerable time invested in each saw but I do not do the rebuild with resale values in mind as I keep all my saws for my own use.
That saw that is on eBay will run the new owner $250-300 for parts alone and that is for what is stated in the listing which you cannot truly depend on. It will go for much more than $100. by the time the auction ends and add on shipping and you have a $450-500. project saw on your hands.IMO

Buy a good running(and good looking if needed) 044 or 440, take it apart, put it back together and you still have a good saw(if you payed attention during disassembley) and you figured out how to work on them.

I'm not steering you away from a project, but you will have much more than $100 in a finished runner....

I don't want to spend much on the carcass. If I'm putting needed new parts in my saw, I know whats in there. The thing about ebay is that a 'good running saw' could have its c&p shot and I don't know what the condition of it is. If I get a worthless carcass and I have good parts in it, I would feel more comfortable with what I know is good in it.

My 365 I bought on ebay, was a 'good running saw' with its cylinder shot and fuel caps were trash etc. So if I buy a 'good running 044' I will still have to put mula into it.
