I had a guy bring over a 46cc poulan with a 20 inch bar today and wanted me to look at it, he bought it new at the farm store and has only cut a load or 2 of wood with it, he said it wouldn't rev like it did when he bought it, the first thing i did was take off the air filter, what a piece of crap this saw is! the inside of the carb had a solid coating of sawdust that was sucked in from the bottom part of the filter,i blew it out and it didn't help it much so i told him to take it back and see if he could get his money back and i would get him a saw. I have never seen anything so cheap made as this saw,it's a wonder they even run at all.

I had the same thing happen with a craftsman! My wife's cousin brought it over so I could sharpen his chain I could not believe what a pile of :censored:
I couldnt even get it to start, no compression what so ever. And the crazy thing was he said he gave close to 300 for it a yr ago! He came back and wanted to know what i thought I told him to throw that junker as far as he could and get a real saw! He didnt throw it he took it home but he also took home a husky I sold him too!!

Would that be a PP295" I had always thought that was an okay saw, better than the 1xx series Huskies at least. Maybe the air filter wasn't installed properly. I need to pay attention to the filter on my PP330 or it acts like this.

Yay for Husky air injection!

Because they are "special"saws, for "special" people....

Can we safely say that most box store saws are crap? Yeah, Lowes has the 455, which isn't terrible, and TSC carries some mid level Huskies. Menards has Efco's now, which are probably the best box store saws available now. The HomeDepotLites are just a joke.

Its a Poulan, what do you expect? As for all bigbox store saws being junk, ummmm, no. Echos are a quality saw that is sold at a bigbox store and Huskys are also sold at bigbox stores and are definetly not junk saws.
I guess some of you Stihl guys forget that a lot of local hardware stores sell Stihls and the people who work there are no more saw experts than the people who work at Lowes or Home Depot are.

The last Echo I saw at a box store was a lone 370 at the Depot last summer, a few years earlier they had a full line of Echos, and have gone entirely to those crappy ChinaLites.

I think as long as you take care of your saw, It will last a long time.

I know most everyone on the message board thinks Craftsman saw's are junk. And I'm sure there not of the BEST of quality, but my craftsman has been running great for over 15 years and still works like new. All I have ever done to this saw was replace the spark plug (1's), clean the air filter, and replaced the bar.

ALL I'm trying to say that most saw failures are due to people's neglect of not taking care of there equipment. Any saw can fail if not properly taken care of.

Just my 2c worth.

I have a 295/4620 that was given to me by a neighbor I have $12.00 invested in it for a new old style two piece muffler that I modded.
As I got it it was set so lean it would have burnt up in no time but a carb adjustment a 15'' bar that I had lying around some woodsman pro 28RC
And I have not been able to kill it!
The air filter is much better than the chunk of foam used on the cheaper Poulans but then my saw's make chips not dust!
The plastic on it is cheaper than my Solo also a 45cc saw but it gives up nothing to the Solo in power.
I also made it into a 295 by working over the quick adjust chain tensioner as it was originally a 4620. I will admit The quick adjust chain tensioner was a peice of junk.

Sorry, but I disagree. I am not a logger, but as a consumer with a small farm to maintain, I would urge people to spend a little more. Recent Craftsman /Poulans, make the odds much better you will have trouble. I am a maintenace fanatic, and always thought I can take care of something or fix it and save some $ on quality. My saws are clean enough for surgery, but the grief a couple Poulan Pro's put me through was not worth the $100-200 saved on a better homeowners saw. I have a pile of Poulans/craftsman I cannabalize for me and the neighbors, to keep others running. I will give them this; there are tons of them around for a cheap parts supply, and I have learned how to rebuild a poulan. You might still get a good one that lasts, but the ignition and compression on these saws do not seem tolerate the most modest abuse. If you want to roll the dice, the Echo's have to be a better bet.

I :love1: my Stihl's after 20 years of box store grief. (You can substitute any brand of better saw) I wish I had done it sooner. I would have had more time to hunt and fish the farm, rather that work on saws in the barn. Based on this site, there appears to be alot of guys who like to spend time in the barn with their saws.:dizzy:

I hate to say it, but my pp295 is sort of my favorite saw right now. I drilled a few extra holes in muffler, gave the carb a good cleaning and adjusted the jets and it really rips now. I also switched to a 16 inch bar running .325 nk from Baileys which seemed to speed things up. I know my husky 51 is a much better saw and the mac pm610 sounds wicked cool, but the red headed step child refuses to hang its head.

Where my dad works, they bought 2 new Poulan Pro PP2046AVX saws year before last, they asked me to set them up out of the box.

The first one, I added mix and bar oil. Pulled the rope once, twice, then POP...no more recoil. The "buffer" spring in the recoil came apart and destroyed the recoil spool.

The 2nd one, I added fuel, and bar oil, pulled and pulled and pulled, and finally it ran, ran "okay" at best, but wouldnt oil at all. The oiler was cracked and it was hemmoraging oil out the housing.

Boxed them both up and took them back...cost was 200 each new.

They brought me back 2 new Echo CS-370's.

Added fuel to both, and bar oil. Primed, and choked...pulled the rope 2 times and it stumbled. Choke in, and it ran, the 2nd one started the same way. Both idled great out of the box, and revved with no flat spots, and both oiled perfectly.

Yes, both saws costed 140 dollars more...and have like 12 cc's less dispalcement, and 4" shorter bars...but when it comes down to it, you know which saws you can rely on to start and operate in an emegency, and which ones you cant.
