Took the cheap made in China piece of crap Homelite 42cc 18" bar broken chainsaw still under warranty to the repair shop today. I asked if he was still a Homelite repair center. He laughed at me. I said, "So we don't have one here I take it" (small community) He laughed again. He gave me the name of the lady to ask for at Home Depot in the Return To Vendor department, and if she had any questions about the saw not being fixable, have her call him. Well, she had gone home for the day, so the lady at the customer service counter called the store manager and explained the situation. He said to exchange the saw, but I would have to purchase the extended warranty plan. They were out of the model I had, so she gave me a free upgrade to a 46cc pro with 20" bar (I know, it STILL ISN'T A SAW according to a lot of you guys). I ended up paying $24.95, but for the next 2 years, when the saw breaks, and we all know it will, Homelite will send me an authorization for HD to give me a new saw, and I don't even have to return the new broken one. I guess it all turned out okay ......At least I now have a pretty new clean red saw that in theory should provide wood for my stove. And still be easy enough on my back to handle it.

I'm in Tucson visiting my folks for their 65th wedding anniversary, and don't have a memory card reader on this computer, so I can't post a pic till I get home on Tuesday.

You better have them order in a pallet if you get two years of free saws everytime you break one. No, seriously, it sounds like a hell of a deal if they will live up to their end of the bargain. 25.00 is pretty cheap for that kind of warranty.

THAT IS WHAT I CALL LIFE SUCCESS!!! Congratulations to your parents on their milestone and great devotion. I hope they still look at each other as young lovers do:clap::cheers::cheers::cheers:

I'm limited to one replacement after the manufacturer's repair warranty runs out in 2 years. But, since there is no repair facility near me, I am stuck with only getting one replacement.

And I DO plan to get my money's worth out of this saw, and my free one down the road ..........I still have a brand new 18" bar and several good chains from my old saw which will work fine on this one, that'll save me some money for a while ........

It's fair that you got something out of the deal, but this whole idea of buying something to that dies within the warranty period and then getting another item for free an unlimited number of times is clearly unsustainable

The full on conversion of raw materials, like ally and iron ore and oil from places like australia, to steel/ally/plastic stuff made in china, to land fill in first world countries is gonna be looked at by our descendants as mind numbingly dumb. I guess they will have to mine the landfill sites?

ooh ooh ooh, I'd love to discuss this Bob but we'd be relegated to the political forum, or worse :monkey:

Lets just say our US friends would accuse me of being a vibrant shade of green :D

I fully agree. The entire relationship between this customer and Home Cheapo is based on which one can screw the other the most times.

To the OP: Why not get a real saw, from a real shop, that has real service? You box store people pretty much deserve what you get.

Badmouthing competition is not a sign of a professional with "real service."

I dunno,I think there would be some that would agree with me.

I have a hammer that is dated at 1790 and a saw dated at 1860 , they still work pretty - if we're not getting even 20 years out of machines then in
IMHO They're not being made right.

Space, you are pitifully unqualified to provide a definition of what it means to be a professional.

But as Justtools said, Homeless depot is not my competition, but merely an occasional source of entertainment.

Here's an interesting fact for you to ponder with your billions of dollars in merchandise. I do more OPE dolllars than either the local Depot or Lowes does. They do more units, but I do plenty of big ticket items that their "sales associates" such as yourself could not possibly dream of selling.

You think I dream about selling the stuff you do? Don't break your arm patting yourself on the back there dude. I'm not going to lower myself to bickering with you. As I've alluded to, it's not professional.

Result for you, that's good. Take it easy on the new one, though. I don't reckon this is you, but lots of people view an extended warranty as a challenge. I offer my 10-year-old Poulan 2150 (around $100 new) with probably 20 gallons of mix through it so far as evidence that even a cheap saw can last a long time given reasonable use and a modicum of care.

Good deal, You got a new and bigger saw and a new two year warrenty, I'd say you did alright. home depot did good. keep on using that saw and don't worry about what people say. The fact is you have less than two hundred dollars invested and have a brand new saw. Most here have thousands of dollars invested to do the same thing you will do.

I for one have a lot of money invested, nothing near most here but at the end of the day yours will cut the same wood mine will.

Now are there better, Sure. But if you're on a budget and can't afford an expensive saw, well you bought what you could afford.

Now put it to work.

I'd use that Homie, taking care of it, but at the same time get you a coffee can and put ten bucks a week in it and before you know it you'll have enough to buy a really solid saw from a dealer of your choice, that will help you keep it going for years. It's not just HD, our society has become a throw away society, somone mentioned on another post about someone interning at poulan, them designing their homeowner saws to run a 100 hours, the pro's a 1000 hours, it's sad state, everything seems like it is being made to throw away, from cars to chainsaws. The problem is that's all most consumers are willing to pay for. My 028 is over 30 years old and will prolly last another 30, the cost of ownership per year is minimal, in the end you get what you pay for. There's nothing wrong with buying the best you can afford at the time to get by, while saving for it's replacement.

Thats a pretty good deal. I guess HD is charging 24.95 to recoup future losses down the road. If those saws held up real good its a winner for HD but those saw aren't known to last very long.

HD has done something else that surprized me. Back in Feb we got 30 inches of snow here in Va. I always said I would never own a snowthrower but after all that shoveling my mind changed. I got online and looked around at the various brands and did alittle reading. Seems the Airens suppose to be one of the better brands of snowthrowers. I started checking prices and found they vary greatly depending on where you buy them from. While searching various web sites I got a e-mail ad from HD featuring Airens snowthrowers of all things right when I was in the mood for one.

I checked out several different models and decided on a 30incher with a 342cc motor and heated handles. I check several sites and the prices varied as much as 500.00-600.00 for the same model. I wrote down the model of the one I wanted and went back to the HD ad and low and behold there was the exact same model I had decided on. It was 1599.95, which was way lower than anyone else.

I hopped onto the HD webiste and brought up the snowthrowers and while looking at them a box appeared on my screen asking if I wanted to talk to a outdoor power equipmemt rep. I clicked yes. This person asks how can I help and blah blah blah. Then they go if you order today we will give you a promotion code that will save you 10%. I was like dayummmm so I took the offer and ordered the machine. Free delivery, now over 700.00 less than a few other sites I had priced with that 10% off promotion code they tossed in.

Two weeks the local Airens dealer calls me and says we have a snowthrower to be delievered to you. I go huh. They say didn't you order one from HD, I go yes, they go that order went to Airens, they contacted us to make the delivery and we will be your servicing dealer for that machine. I was like okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. So it worked out pretty good for everyone I guess. They showed up with the machine, gave me a demo, a card to call if I have any problems. So HD made a few pennies, Ariens made a few pennies, the local dealer made a few pennies and me, I made out like a bandit saving over 700.00 verses some others and having a servicing dealer about 30 minutes away. Best of all that Airens dealer is also a Stihl dealer so we will get along real good. The bad part is its warm in VA now and that snowthrower is in my way already, grrrrrrr..
