Local man has a Stihl 028 chainsaw that I all know is it runs. He says his wife bought him a new saw for Christmas and he is letting the 028 go. I do not know a lot about these saws and what possible mods can be done. Larger top ends is the biggest question. I tried looking at the completed listings on Ebay but the 028s have been selling for $50-$200 dollars, that is a pretty good variance. I am going to look at the saw tomorrow and would like a little input before I get there. BTW, he is asking for $100 for this saw.

To recap:
Is this saw considered Pro or homeowner?
Is there larger p/c available?
Any known issues with this model?
Are parts plentiful?

I plan to take my compression tester and, if the owner allows, pull the muffler.

Install a Super P&C on it and find a Super muffler for it, do a little mod on the muffler and they make a great firewood saw. Never seen much increase in power on a ported 028 but it does not hurt to do them. I have done 8 of them so far and found they benifit most with just a good tight Super P&C with muffler mod and a good sharp chain.

The 028 is an excellent saw for it's vintage. Durable as a stone. No big issues with 'em. Fuel/impulse/tank vent lines get hard with age, crack/split. Not a screamer for sure, but they just work. Don't think there are many upgrades that can be done to them. Mufflers flow pretty well OEM, no larger jugs available that I'm aware of. Depending on condition they go for what ever people are willing to pay ($25-200). I have five of the buggers just because I like 'em.

They made 028's for like 20 some years, at least 4 variations. Do search lots of info. Marketed for firewood cutters and homeowners, but a pro saw in every way. The 028s (super) is the most desirable.

:agree2::agree2:

I have an 028 super that I muffler modded and that thing puts a smile on my face every time I run it. I have run a few stock 026's and that old 028 smokes them.....For some reason it "feels" better to me too.

This is the muff mod I did on mine.........

In my opinion, the 028s are getting harder to find. Some parts are still available thru dealers but can get pricey. The 028s range from AV's 2.62 cubic inch, Wood Bosses 2.87 cubic inches, and the Supers 3.14 cubic inch. Some of the 028s have points and some electronic ignition. You asked about modding, yes they can be but I would suggest finding a more modern saw like the 026 where piston, cylinder, and other parts are easier to find. I see your in virginia , I'm on the other side of roanoke, there are several 028's here and could be yours. Joey

Here are some photo's of a mod on a 028 AV Super, the muffler is in two parts so it's easy to work on.

Nice Thanks for the help. Its ok to go that big without any other mods?

The tube is about 5/8" i.d. Some guys here recommend 3/4" tube but I was having trouble getting the 3/4" to fit under the brake. All you'll need is a carb re-tune and you're good to go.

RacerX, did almost exactly what I did to mine. Your Wood Boss may have a different style muffler than the "Super" muffler we modded.

Maybe post a photo of your muffler and we can give you some ideas. The earlier ones were a lot less restrictive, so I don't know if there's as much gain to be made.

Ok i'll take it off tomorrow and get some pics

Well i tries to post my pics tonight but i cant it says pic are to large to upload? I can email them to someone if they would like. Anyway my muffler is not the same style as u guys so maybe not worth doing?

The mufflers in the above picts are Super mufflers, they have a grille on the front of them, your muffler is likely from a non Super. It is easy to get a Super muffler off the Bay, they usually go for $20-$25 and are easier to modd than the regular 028 muffler.
