Took a mental health day today. Slept in, haven't done anything productive, etc. Watching a little TV and eating cold pizza, I hear the wooosh of air brakes and peek out the window toward my driveway. Sure enough, the propane man just backed in. I take off like a rocket and head outside to cut him off before he can even think about pulling the hose out. I haven't even checked my tank all year, we look, it's sitting at 60%. That's 300 gallons, enough to heat my hot water for several years. He says, "Sure you don't want me to top ya off?" I respond (while motioning to the 14 cord of stacked wood and 5 cord in a thrown pile), "Yea, pretty sure! Have a nice day!" So, sitting around the house doing nothing saved me around $250. I can almost justify buying another saw now!!

300 gallon and you're at 60 % means you have a 500 Gallon Tank, as they can only fill to 80 % (400 gallons). By doing my "Gazinta's" like Jethro Bodine, the man would have topped you off another 100 Gallons (20%) for $250. That means your price per gallon right now is $2.50. Might have been worth it to let him top it. We are at $2.85 per Gallon right now..... at least in SW PA. Doubt you'll get it cheaper in a few years when you need it again.

Dealer's are doing that around here too! Putting oil and gas in peoples tanks without asking. Got my father the other day. He fought with them and then they lowered the price and gave him a payment plan. Real sneaky.

That sucks (well good you caught it). When I switched to the owb, I called them and went off a keep full plan and went to a fill on request, and they haven't been out unless i called. (i had them fill it up with summer, while i was still on last years contract price.

same thing happened to me today with the oil man. $4.25 per gallon, I only let him pump in 100 gallons, I think that should get me through the year.

I am proud to say that the gas company came out last week and got our big tank, and I was glad to see it go. We only use if for the gas stove because the wife refuses to cook on electric, and the 250 gallon tank lasted us almost seven years.

It ran out three weeks ago, and when we called to get a partial fill, they said no way. Either fill it up or they charge a $75 fee, and still have a 100 gallon minimum. I told em to come get the dang thing, and hooked a small barbecue bottle up to the line to get us by until I get one of those hundred pound bottles hooked up to a manifold system. Funny thing is, we have been using just that little bottle for three weeks now, and the thing hardly feels like anything gone out of it, and the wife uses the stove at least once a day.

Yep, glad to see that tank gone now!

If you can afford it, I think having a large propane tank topped off is a tremendous backup. It can fill in if something happens to you and you can't get wood, also, because propane lasts forever basically, a generator hooked to it is the least hassle way to have a long time back up electricity source.

You can buy propane cheap now, then sit on it. I guarantee it ain't gonna be cheap 20 years from now, when it will still be good to burn, and you can't store gasoline or diesel near that long, and also will guarantee gasoline and diesel ain't ever gonna be cheap again either.

We have one, and as soon as I can find a cheap adaptor for one of my gennys, that is where it is going. Our tank is full and got filled cheap several years ago and haven't used a single BTU from it yet. There's two propane wall heaters in the cabin, and I have a large propane heater/furnace in my storage, but haven't had to use them. the only propane we use is ladyZs propane outside cooker. she uses that when it is real hot out. the cabin came with electric stove hookup, so that's what we have and use now, the propane tank and heaters install came a few years later. Now if the electric stove ever goes kaput, ya, I'll switch then to propane. For when the power goes out, we either use the outside cooker or I have a table top camping propane two burner we can use if it is like pouring rain outside..and yep, here, with this crappy power system, we have used it a lot.

Heck, I'd like to have a dual fuel fridge and freezer for that matter, electric and propane, like what is in our RV. That thing is just small though.

Of course you either need to own the tank or use enough every year they don't get annoyed with you, but just sayin'. I like having backups for my backups. Been through too many hard times in my life to be complacent about things...and looking at the news a lot...I ain't being complacent about the future, either...

Your right, a back up is always a good idea. But I like to think I got that covered anyway. For heat, we heat with wood. And if for some reason I was unable to get wood, say like an injury prevented a summer harvest, then we still are always one year ahead. And if we burned that up and was still unable to cut wood?Well, thats what friends are for. As of right now, I have cut and supplied firewood to two good buddies that were layed up and didnt get there wood in for the year, and I reckon they owe me one if the same happened to me.

And if all else fails, we have the electric heat pump. The rule in this house, no wood carried for the wife to build a fire with, she throws the switch on for the heat pump, so occasionally it gets used for heat in the winter when I forget to fill the wood box before leaving for the day(dang women anyway, the friggin stack of wood is stacked on the back covered deck, but she still sticks to that stupid wood box filled rule.)

Back up generator in case power goes out, and its fired and run once a month, if nothing else I plug the welding machine into it and run it for an hour.

Just cant see enough reason to have a 250 gallon propane tank in my yard, irritated me every time I looked at the dang thing. Im glad its gone, right along with that dang $40 a year tank rental fee.

Hi Guys:

I heat entirely with wood. Burn 5 full cords a season. My LP furnace is turned down to 45 degrees and never kicks in. I have a 500 gal LP tank and pay an $85 lease fee per year on it. They say this is to cover all maintenance. But they've never done any maintenance on the tank. Had it for 10 years so paid $850 in lease fees. I use around 200 gallons of LP for cooking per year on a gas stove. I'd like to dump the 500 gallon tank and get two or three 100 lb tanks. Can I use any 100 lb tank? Would these from Lowes for $129 each be OK? Are they a hassle to get filled? They must weigh a ton when filled, but I have a dolly to handle them. I just hate forking over that annual lease fee. When transporting them, must they be standing upright, or can they be laid down?

Genesis5521,

I just bought myself a 100lbs cylinder from the local hardware store that sells propane, by the time it was all said and done it was about $5 more than if I had gone to lowes bought a tank and brought it to the RV place couple towns over to have it filled at a slightly lower rate. The $5 saved be about an hours time and I was able to support the local guys. Using my horrible math, I figure the after the second time I fill the new tank it will have paid for itself. As of right now I am still running on the tanks the previous owners have left. I have called the company umpteen times asking about prices and when they can fill since I am down to less than 1 full tank, however they don't appear to be that concerned with making money at the momment.

I looked into this recently as I need a new water heater and would like to switch and am still on the fence (no NG available). We have electric stove, but the wife would like gas eventually - you know... "might as wells?" The quotes I got from propane companies supplying a big tank were quite a racket with all of the conditions they set.

Check out Tractor Supply for the 100lb size. I was told that you have to transport them standing up and it was real hard to get anyone to deliver otherwise on demand for small amounts. I am probably going with the electric WH...

Oh, yeah, no saws for you. You need to save that $250.00 for a different toy.
