P42

Hello all. I was out cutting fire wood today. It was the first time I've used the p42hp that I picked up and I loved it. It ran great and kicked ass the whole time. It was more fun to run than a friends brand new stihl. Anyway, I was running 40:1 fuel mix and it ran great. But I have read that some folks here run 32:1. I ran out of gas today so I just wanted to get some input before I mix more. The saw is great and I just want to make sure that I do all I can to make sure it's around for a while. Also is there a difference between a p42 and a p42hp if so what is that difference? Just didn't know if people drop the hp when they talk about the saws. thanks for any info.

P42 came in kinda a few versions, early P42 Pioneer, then P42 Westerns, then Hp. Then the Pioneer Partner P42's

Westerns came bridged exhuast port, Hp's had NO bridge and longer narrower exhaust port, P42 regulars kinda fall in the middle. NOW THERES LOTS OF SWAPPED stuff out there so DON'T worry your may be different like MOST!

Carbs can vary in sizes too

Some have larger outlets on mufflers.

P42HP out West here came with Center outlet muffler same as P50-P61 (Pioneers ads showing them)
Westerns had two piece ignition.

Pioneer Partners all came as HP's as far as carbs and cylinders are concerned.

P42's ARE GREAT GREAT SAWS!!!! I love my P42 Western, PURE 4.0cu POWER!!! Try a two stage reed!!!!!

Thanks for the info. I will check into the two stage reed.
 
Air filter cover is easy. Any of the big P series, from a Farmsaw to a P-62 will fit.

Coil may be more difficult. Ebay sometimes. Chainsawr sometimes.
 
From what I have read they seem to be hard to find? I think it has the 2 piece coil?Air filter covers are always broke LOL

Yeah, the coils are a two piece unit and they are very hard to find, used is about all that can be found for them. The rest of the parts are not too hard to find and many of the bigger P series saws including the Farmsaw and Farmlite will fit. The airfilter covers on the 41 are not like the ones on the P20 up to the 28, they are brittle thin plastic and are usually broke.
 
The P42's really work well with a velocity stack and a K&N filter. I have one, and I love that setup. Gives the saw a whole different sound, and IMO improves power. Plus, face it, it just looks cool.

Hey guys, I just picked up a very very nice Farmsaw II and this quote from Duane is kind of fits in with my question. Where does my saw fall? From what I can find its kind of like a p42, but instead of guessing it would be easier to just ask you guys. Any saws the same as the farmsaw II? What port and reed setup do I have?

Just got done rebuilding my first pioneer. I think it came out pretty good. I replaced alot of parts and spent a good amount of time out in the Man cave on this old beast. I got to say thanks to Ed for all the help and parts for this project. Next is gonna be a p 60,61 or 62...

Just got done rebuilding my first pioneer. I think it came out pretty good. I replaced alot of parts and spent a good amount of time out in the Man cave on this old beast. I got to say thanks to Ed for all the help and parts for this project. Next is gonna be a p 60,61 or 62...

That looks great! Makes me want to get busy on my P52 & P62 ! LOL Then maybe the P41 & P28? Very nice job!! :msp_thumbsup:

Very nice job on the P50.
What did you use for paint (yellow)? I have a couple of extra good running P60's if you get the itch.

What did you use for paint (yellow)? I have a couple of extra good running P60's if you get the itch.

thanks, the color is called green/yellow and was the closet I could find off the old parts. I used WANDA Wandabase HS polyester basecoat, very good paint and better then the price of other's. I've used it several times and found it as good as PPG and better than Dupont Chromabase.
Are you looking to sell one of those p60's? I have the ITCH!!!!!
 
I have a P62, and I have a hardnose 32" Pioneer bar, 058 gauge. I changed the sprocket out to 3/8", and set it up with 3/8" 058g Husky full comp chisel chain. It slid nice and easy in the bar rail. I started it up, and the bar tip started getting really hot. Like really smoking hot. Oiler is working great in the saw, and chain is not too tight. I do not have a lot of experience with hardnose bars, so can somebody tell me what is wrong? The chain is wearing hard on the rails of the tip for sure, and the the tip rails are turning black.

I don't know why, but I've had the same thing happen on a few bars. Usually at the top and bottom right where it starts to round the corner. My theory is that is has something to do with the stellite on the tip, seems like it's tight where it begins and ends, something to do with the welding process tightening up the groove maybe. Mine only smoked for a short time and then stopped.

I'd be interested in anyone elses ideas.

The chain on a hardnose bar has to be ran with a little more slack in it compared to a sprocketnose bar, loosen off the chain a tad and it might stop heating up as long as the oiler is putting out enough oil. Running the chain a bit slack might do the trick and run the thickest oil your pump can put out.
