Can I get an aftermarket piston for a Dolmar 5100? I like the Episans and Meteors that I have been getting for Stihl stuff, but I cannot find one for the Dolmar.

Is there anything that can be done to the 5100 to make it more robust other than en-richening the mixture?

These saws are known to come from the factory excessively lean. Enrichening the carb should be the only thing needed to a new 5100. They are otherwise really well built.

Nothing wrong with the build quality, but there are weaknesses in the engineering. :givebeer:

I figured my comment would get a rise out of you :msp_biggrin:. Looking at the pics of the piston above, and guessing what the cylinder looks like, I would say that a new piston/cylinder kit is in order.

The somewhat lacking cylinder cooling (improved on the 5105) may well have something to do with it failing......

The cylinder is cherry. It will be an easy acid clean.

I think your only option is to go through Dolmar. One thing that helps is deleting the carb compensating function. Do this by removing the foam filter sealing ring that sits on top of the carb, and blocking off the hole in the bottom of the filter.

I appreciate the advise.

No AM pistons for it yet. OEM only as far as I know. Glad cyl. will clean up. P&C kit is $185.00. I found em for $$63.00. Make sure your intake boot has the insert 181131021 some of the older ones didn't have.

I think this is all I need:

Part Part number price
Piston kit 181132063 $63.22
Gasket 181131131 $2.10
Sprocket 181224040 $5.82
Carb kit 181153020 $15.21

Shipping should be $7.95

It was interesting to note that both mixture screws were on their "rich" stops. The limiters will be cut off.

What is up with that carb kit? Over $15!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is 3 times what I usually pay for Walbro carb kits. I was recently rebuilding a Stihl 044 and someone commented that they don't rebuild Stihl saws because they are too expensive for parts. Well this is my first Dolmar and I can say that there are parts available for Stihl saws at a much lower cost than this Dolmar.................

At any rate, this thing gave up compression before anything truly got destroyed. It should make a nice 50cc saw in the end. I am repairing it for a buddy. He borrowed it from his father in law and the thing self destructed.....thank you ethanol, the epa, and Dolmar.

The last piston I saw that looked like that was straight gassed... The death was quick and complete, but the jug was salvaged... You sure that was from running lean???:msp_confused:

The fuel in it feels pretty oily. Everything is slippery.

I believe that is common on US sold saws, but it wasn't the case on the 5100S I got from the US - however, that was from a very good dealer......

Substitute the dealer for the ethanol in this case (I think) - he should have fixed a lean factory setting at the point of sale! :givebeer:

The last 026 carb kit I got from the dealer was close to $40.00:msp_confused:
The 5100 I had I had to cut the limiters as soon as I got it.
My 5100 had just about 200psi cold after 2 tanks.Wonder why these saws melt down with a lean factory setting.

I've got a Stihl dealer here in town that won't pull the caps and re-set them either... I think I know why they do it, but I couldn't...

My dealer did this to my saw when I bought it. I have had no problems with it. My compression is 210psi.
