Finally had a warm day and drove the bogger over to the farm where there was a piece of concrete in the shavings barn open I could work on. got my front driveshaft put in, but was too chicken to try out the 4wd right now, chicken and tired. Never had to fix one before. Getting those two circlips lined up and set on the front U joint connection turned out to be a pain. Got a good one billionth of an inch clearance to get both set and the keeper plates (don't know what they are called) cranked down. Hopefully now I can drag myself out of the mud if I back in close to a scrounged tree.

U-joint straps?

Done a fail bit of front axle work. Good lord do I hate press in ball joints...

I guess so, curved guys that fit over the loose caps, with a circlip to keep the cap on. they hold that end of the shaft to the yoke on the front differential. I just about couldn't do it, one or the other of the circlips kept popping off, finally I did the one small crank with the ratchet at a time deal, going around and around evenly. Extremely tedious as not enough clearance to get much of a swing on the ratchet. Oh well, got it done, wayyyy slower than a real mechanic would do it I'm sure. Now if the straps themselves had a raised boss on them, then two points of "keep" would have kept the clips in while they were being compressed.

Of course maybe I was supposed to just bolt it up, then try to needle nose pliers the clips in, but..I did it the other way that seemed easier and more do-able, as the clips are stout.

This has been a real long term get a real cheap roller hunka junk running and working, with a limited budget and even more limited knowledge base.... hehehehe. I just keep putzing away at it, fix what I can when I can, go on to the next whatever. It's functional now, point A to B,(quite good actually), I've used it some going to town, hauled a load of scrap, done a bit of firewooding with it.

Yeah, u-joint straps is the right description, but you shouldn't need the circlips with them. There is usually a small tab on the yoke that keeps the u-joint cap from coming off.

Ya, the tab is there, but the clips were with the rebuilt shaft the machine shop gave me, so I thought I was supposed to use them.

Hmmm...well, if anyone wants to know, they technically can fit!

In this picture you can see the straps and bolts. At the top you can see the tab that Steve mentioned.

The clips might have been leftover from changing the joint. They typically come with 4 retainers, but you wouldn't use two of them on the yoke with the straps. :)

sadly, I have some bad news for you... from Zogger's post it seems he has a brain!!! :numberone:Unfortunately though, that means he's GROSSLY overqualified to run for congress. sorry to be the one to break it to you. :(
Why is it always the ones who want the job are the worst at the job?

And for some reason, you can't get fired. They should be fired......out of a cannon. :D
LMHO!!! like the mayor of Toronto, he admits to smoking crack, gets caught on camera threatening to kill someone here
(caution, graphic language) Then he was asked to resign... he declined... lol!! WHAT???

Too late, hahahaha! I gotz them on there, I'll see how they last. If they fall out, I'll just tighten it up again.

fun fact. the phrase "burning bush" comes from the bible.
American Standard Version
And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

Exactly.

So this thread can go on, and never be finished.

And of course, this forum is about burning wood. So........it works.
