Now that I'm going to be messing with mufflers its time to buy a tachometer. Can I get some advice on brands and sources for a muffler. If there are a variety of features or quality levels, let me know.

Thanks,

tom

The only small engine tach I've ever used is distrib. by Echo. It's made by a Janpanese company but it is the industry standard for hand held. It's about the size of a calculator and comes w/a plug in lead (alligator clip)which allows you hands off reading so you can adjust the carb. I think most Echo dealers can get you one. There are 2 diff. models. I would highly suggest the "PET 1100"? If you have any trouble finding it, e-mail meand I'll set you up with a supplier.

Has any one ever used this one? It looks like it would be a little more versatile than the one I saw in the Madsen's catalog. Or how about this one? Not digital but still wireless (and cheaper). I assume that since both of these are wireless you can adjust the carb. while looking at the tach.

mine is the PET 2000dx.
Bought on ebay for 60 $.
This one is for Kart-Racing.2/4 Cyl. works great if you hold it beside an working saw.

GeorgeW,
The one I have is very similar to the one pictured at Madsen's like Rotax stated. It's the one labelled "B" in the pic. Says "Stihl EDT...". I think mine has a few more bells and whistles but, that one seems pretty much the same. Seems a bit high in price???
I would go to your local Echo dealer first, (that's where I got mine). I do know the Briggs & Stratton distrib. here in IL. carries them but they don't sell retail. If you can't find one, I'll go to my local guy and pick one up for you.

www.tinytach.com

These guys are awesome. No doubt. I ordered a tinytach 2 weeks ago to use on my saw - it doesnt measure over 10k rpm - myu fault for being less than thorough. I call them up and tell Steve my predicament - he is the man! let me tell you! I returned the tinytach and paid the difference for a Techtach as they call it, minus a discount for he wanted for me to be happy. He was interested in using a tach for a chainsaw application so he sent me a prototype tach to test out (the smaller one in the picture). Without charging me anything - ie. tell me what you think etc. Thats pretty unheard of. Anyway, these are both inductive (ie. remote tachs), which means you can just hold/lay them next to the saw while you adjust the high speed screw

PS. Who the he## wa it that good old dealerwork was only available from your local dealer... Bull. I can use the pocket tach for 4strokes as well!! how about that for all the tachs mentioned before - I dont think they can do that, can they??? I can select the amount of sparks per revolution (in degrees) to make the tach display correct rpm for any motor with a traditional ignition system..now this is cool. BTW. both have replaceable batteries too. The price is awesome - call Steve@DTI and tell him you went through arboristsite and he will help you out with the price that is lower than pretty much any simple 2-stroke tach out there. These are awesome...The tech tach can be use for 4 strokes as well if you divide the rpm by 2 or measure 2 cylinders simultaneously.

Now both of these tachs are inductive tachs which means they do NOT require the leads to work - the bigger one is the Techtach that has the leads for both hands off etc. work. Accurate to 5rpm and update real quick to show the right rpm.
PS. the Tundra idles at 735rpm -LOL :blob2:

The phone# is (630) 920-1300 ask for Steve - he's the man!

Did I mention the tach is cheaper than the non-replaceable battery one from Stihl too....

it costs more and only goes to 16k (whats the top rpm on a hopped up 346xp, LOL), not enough for me. Looks better than the rest of the competition though!!

"Very fast installation, simple one wire hookup (wire included)"

is this an inductive meter or do you have to hook up wires? The tachs I described will read the rpm from 12" away with no need to have any wires attached. Makes it easy to tune with the cutting configuration - ie. all covers in place. I personally like the wireless kind. The resolution of the tachometer you posted is only 80 rpm for a 2 stroke - I like to have it a little more accurate than that.

Regardless this is obviously a fair value. Better than what the OEM tachs are, and for less money. I think the DTI tachs have this one beat though. I read through the specs of this tach that you posted and you have to wrap the wire around the plug wire etc. this is not the same. Tinytach does the same kind of tach for lawnmowers etc (goes to 10K rpm) for $36.95 and even has an hourmeter....The INDUCTIVE tachs that I posted a picture of earliermuch more of an elaborate kind of a tool.

PET-1100

This unit is pulse activated. It detects and counts elec. pulses and translates into RPM. Just hold it near the plug cap and it goes to work. Shuts off on it's own too. 20,000 hour battery life but is replacable if necessary. Measures 11 engine types.

2-stroke 1 to 4 cylinders
4-stroke 1 to 8 cylinders.
accurate to +-10 rpm for 2-stroke (+-20 rpm for 4-stroke 1 cyl.
weighs less than 3 ounces
about $100 and IMO well worth it.
use wireless or w/the alligator clip lead.

I've tried a few others and I like this one best by far.

Steve,
I paid $99 for mine. I hope you didn't pay much more?

DTI

Otto,

I just ordered a tach from Steve @ DTI. It's the larger one in your photo. They are out of all of the prototypes for the smaller one but he said they will probably go into production in a month. Steve was a very pleasant guy to deal with and this was by far the least expensive digital wireless tach out there. Thanks for the tip!:)

Jim40 and others,
I spoke with my tach "connection" yesterday. As an Echo dealer, he buys at a special price when he goes to Echo's Dealer Service school. Echo cuts the normal price and he passes the savings on to his customers. Unfortunately, service schools aren't until Feb. or March for Echo dealers. So, the deals wouldn't come until then. Sorry to get your hopes up.

Thats ok seesaw.....I went ahead and ordered one from Otto's buddy yesterday....nice folks to deal with....they send it...you get to try it out....if you like it...then send'em a check...if you dont like it....just send the unit back...can't beat that!

This is a very interesting thread. Are these tachs truly inductive pickup or are they audio? I guess if you have to hold it 12" away it's probably inductive though. I did a test last night where I hooked up a small microphone to a frequency counter and ran one of my saws. It works just fine for getting the RPM and you can do it from as far away as you can hear the saw. It would be easy to put the stuff needed in as small a case as the ones shown. Oh well, just horsing around.
