What We Would Like To See New/Changes In Saws!!!

my number #1 gripe with any saw manufacturer is the AIR FILTERS!!!!!

seriously there saw makers, how much coke did you snort before designing these airfilters? felt filters are GARBAGE - they get gummed up with oil, gas and dust, and fray apart after one cleaning.

GET WITH THE program and make some steelmesh/gauze/steel mesh filters (you know, like K&N, or Fram Airhog?) . At elast they can be WASHED and reoiled, and they trap a crap load of dust and dirt.

Gas and oil plugs. Again, how much product did you shove up your noses? these new "flip" up pop top twist fuel/oil caps are a frikking joke! THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG with the tried and true screw on cap!!! why did you change it? i really LOVE being covered in fuel becasue your stupid fliptop pop top fliipppy floppy flip floptiptop bop de dbop gas caps BREAK beacues they are CHEAP PLASTIC!!!!!

please bring back METAL chainbrake bars! I really dont appreciate drpping 1000 bucks of blod sweat and tears onto a new saw, only to have your CHEAP PLASTIC chainbreak handle flex and get soft, or break right off.

and whats with these so called "powerful" saws that sound like a bumblebe that got poked int he azz? i want a chainsaw, a loud, rumbly, scares little kids and grown men alike, CHAINSAW, that howls butchery and murder as i'm bucking up firewood....not a saw that sound like my grannies sewing machine.

Don't hold back now, tell us what you really think.

I'm not happy with the way saw designs are headed. I know that they have to meat more strict EPA regs these days. But do they have to add a 20% weight increase in the process, or choke them down with cat mufflers to the point of grossly under performing their existing weight.

I don’t know about online ordering it would be nice but I understand the need to support your local dealer but what would be the harm in being able to call your locale dealer on the phone and have the parts either ready for pick up or sent to your door. Your still getting them from your locale dealer and he is still getting the money for it.

So far I have not had any problems with the flip caps you just gotta remember to put the big tab in the big hole and you’ll be fine. I agree though the old caps worked just fine and their was no need to “improve” on something that was never a problem. Given the choice I would rather just stick to the good ole screw caps.

And I agree bring back the manual oiler in addition to the automatic oiler on the big saws.

Oh yeah I like the built in tach idea to nothing real big or to fancy just a small digital readout to let you adjust to different conditions

My brand new 660 came with the "old-style" screw on plugs. Pure heaven. I saw the 460 and 441 sitting there with the flippy type things and just shook my head. I'm guessing it won't be long before all the Stihls have the flippy things.

I thought that all the new Stihls had the flippey-thingey oil and gas caps...

And what is with the dial-o-matic easy chain adjuster thing? They look cheap and prone to fail to me. I'll keep the simple side screw and bar nuts.

Its weird. I've seen the 460's with both types of caps. I have only seen the 660s with the screw caps. Don't know what to make of it but sure was glad to get one with the screw caps. I know it wasn't on the shelf for long 'cause they sell a couple few 660s a month. I was in the shop again yesterday and they had four 372's on the shelf with full wrap bars. Price was about the same as Baileys. They had a 575 sitting next to the 372's and man that thing looks a lot bigger. Wish I had the change, I would have picked up a 372 just to show I'm not biased.

Ultra said it, electric start. I'm tired of pulling ropes.

The 660 is still the old caps... until they need new dies.

Strangely... the thumbwheel chain tensioner works pretty damn well... and the one used on the pro saws is much more soild than that on the MS180->250... It's available for the 361, and coming (option) on the 441. Not sure I'll spring for one either, but..

Is this the future?

Hello,my first post in this area. Here in Norway I have a Sthil441 that has an "inboard" air cleaner, mounted with a cover that has "snap fittings".No tool needed to undo the cover, the air cleaner itself is a almost see through membrane, that you can just blow the dust off with your breath. It looks as though the design might be an aid to working in extreame cold, well where the airfilter is mounted anyway. This info might be wll old for you guys, but its news to me!

I'd have to go with the others on the air filters, manual oilers and more metal.

Same here...

Chains that never dull, no matter what.

Um ... some sort of hybrid fuel line that would last like 20 years ...

Carbs that can't gum up because they are special ...

and of course 'autopilot' :rockn:

Lightweight, high revving 4-stroke that has fuel injection. It would also have a dry sump lubrication system that uses the chain oil tank as it's oil sump and an warning for low oil level with a low oil shut down. And heated handles would be a plus too.

I suspect the QCA will desturb the chip flow under the clutch cover quite a bit.......
:( :yoyo: :yoyo:

So will I.....

wow so many great ideas !! make my tach an anolog(easier to read at a glance)if I had to chose just one it would be to look up all parts and accesories that could be used on my saw and be able to order them-my dealer could and should get some kick back but Im sure sells would jump up like 500%

I'd like to see a complete IPL come with each saw when you buy it.

Add to that a workshop manual. The 361 needs to come stock with the full size clutch cover, dual dogs and the 441 bar studs. I like the idea of truly clear gas and oil tanks.

I don't understand how folk could think they have those new flip caps on and get soaked with fuel. For me, they either line up and click closed or the cap won't go on at all. I've not seen any half and half that would make me think it was locked when it wasn't. I'm just a weekend warrior tho, and don't use my saw daily so that probably makes the difference.

So far, the 660 has escaped most of the "great new ideas", but it's just a matter of time...

Back on topic: most of my wish list has already been addressed here:

better air filtration system
tach/hour meter
IPL included with the saw... for that matter, a service manual isn't a lot to ask
more oiler control
less restricted muffler
adjustable carb

Of course, there are regulatory restrictions screwing some of these things up, but we can dream. I would have loved to order my 660 factory equipped with hi-vol oil pump, dual port muffler, and limiter caps sans limiters.
