Mostly small stuff. 90% an 18" could do. I'm not cutting down trees. Only going for stuff that has snapped or already fallen naturally. For log length grapple loads, also smaller stuff. To hell with knocking around big rounds.

Chatted with a friend today, and there's a place not too far away that sells used Stihl saws. All rebuilt and ready to go. He highly suggested that I check it out.

There is also a bit of a twist with all this. I actually can't use the saw. Er, I shouldn't use the saw. I'm a severe hemophiliac. One whoops and my wife is burying me in the garden. My Dad is going to do the cutting as well as friends. Saw will just be here for others to use while I split and stack. I'm going to pick up some quality PPE too to have on hand as well.

So the gift cards that was the whole point of the thread so you could get a brand new saw with a warranty for $100 is moot now? The money that you didn't want to spend is now not a issue? Ok got it.

By all means explore your options and do what you think is best for you.

Now can we talk about what saw you cut firewood with?

To be truthful. A brand new saw should cut great and cut like a new one. But how they "last", well that is another story.

One can get great results from an "El Cheapo" from time to time, as well as a lot of cases with a bad outcome.
Hard to work on, hard to get parts, no dealer support, etc., all factor in.

The same goes for more expensive, more respected brands...

But if one gets feedback from folks that has worked on a wide range of all chainsaws for 30 years or so, and they relate "truths" from their experiences working on all of these saws, and results are from an observation over a length of time, etc.

they should garner a bit more credence than some kid that may have worked on a couple.
Not really squalling about which brand is best, etc....

Just from my perspective:
If some kid brings me a chainsaw anymore, I usually waste @ one half of an hour talking him out of me working on his saw, and don't charge him a dime....
Hell I ought to require a $20 bill before I let him get out of his car......

But fighting over the quality of a Lowes "el cheapo", well, you will usually get what you pay for....

I just thought it would be interesting. That's all.
What the hell this thread is shot anyway and we got duped by the op it seems.
Well I was using this one, but I ported and sooped it up too much till it melted itself down. Burnt up 40 acres too.
Good thing I had my PPE on and can still run some.. 100_0903 (Custom).JPG

I was with you all the way till the last sentence. Lowes, dealer, Stihl, Husky whatever, compare a $400 to a $400 chainsaw from wherever they come from.

That is just down right interesting. “Modified mark”.

Mark, I don't think that we got "Duped" by the OP, my understanding of his post was that he IS BUYING a saw,to BE USED on his property, by Family and Friends, but being a Hemopheliac, he doesn't feel that it is Prudent for HIM to OPERATE the saw, even though he is buying it.

Doug thats not what I was intending. It was more the I can only afford this much and have to use the Lowes gift card thing. It seems different now then when the thread started. Then there was the 68 year old thing in the profile too.

My response here is for the OP. I prefer to support small businesses. However, and for what it’s worth, my dad bought a Husqvarna from Lowe’s. He ended up straight gassing it. Took it back to Lowe’s, told them he straight gassed it. They said, no problem, and gave him a full refund. The fact that he is an 80 year old veteran may have had something to do with that. Not saying big box is better or worse, just something to think about. But if you go pro saw you better be able to work on them yourself or have a good dealer who can.

Harley, the OP, isn't buying a Lowe's "el Cheapo" saw (unless you consider a Husqvarna 455, an el cheapo" The Op has some Lowe's Gift Cards and the 455 would leave him paying about $100 out of pocket in addition to the gift cards, he is just looking to get the best saw that he can, without spending more out of pocket than he has too, he was looking to get a GOOD saw, and started the thread asking what other members experiences and knowledge about the 455 were.

Hi Mark, I haven't seen that it changed (at least for the OP) from having Gift Cards, and trying to keep the additional out of pocket as Low(e's:)) as possible.

The age thing, was mentioned, and the OP replied that he just entered random dates in the profile info, because of Identity theft, there are a lot of people that either don't give that info, or as in this case give incorrect info, I understand why they do it.

Doug

Yeah I got that and maybe I misunderstood but sounded like he was going to take a friends advice and go check out rebuilt Stihls..

Doubt he will buy many of them for $100. If money is really the issue...
