I own a 361 and a 7900,

I have been reading so much about the 441 and the much coveted 440. I had to find and try one.

as I rounded the corner in a buddies barn- there it is a freshly tuned up 440 so i took it out for a few logs.

I now understand why the 440 is the standard go to saw.

it seemed to do everything well, I really liked the saw and am now considering starting the search for a left over or maybe I'll just wait until I am asked to return the one I have.

does that make me a bad person- it there a charge called sawnapping?

044/440 did indeed do its job very well. I picked up one from the fire company they had leaned out and burnt up. Saw in great shape. New jug and piston and she runs like a Champ, for sale, sorry..

It holds the current title as "King of the 70cc class":hmm3grin2orange:

Why yes there is, not that a poll was needed though:jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop:

Well if the poll concluded it was the King of the 70cc then by Joe it is the King of the 70cc. I own a King myself. Doesn't have the power of yours though, I'm still wondering what you got under the hood of that saw, grrrrr

I shoulda took the muffler off that saw when I had my hands on it, bet the exhaust port is the size of a dollar bill on it, hmmmmmmmm. Next time you come up bring that saw with ya. I wanna pull a CSI on it,LOL

I've come to consider something about the size of the 440 is "just the right size" for almost anything...well, almost. And the 440 does it well, and has it done to it well, hard to find one that hasn't been "well used".

440

Indeed the 440/044 is an excellent saw. I loved mine. Problem is, it still doesn't really stack up against a 7900. Hence, it's very close to some other saws that'll do a little more than it will. I'd say if you were going to try and get a new 44 your better off to get a 7900 for about $200 less, better vibration, lighter, and a full HP more than the 440. Don't get me wrong, it's a GREAT saw, it's just too close in size to others that'll out cut it. I love my old 288XP also, but I know that for a 90cc saw, if I were buying a new one, I'd buy a 660 mag. Get my point here??? I know where you can get an almost new 44 for $525 plus shipping. I don't think it has 20 hours on it. Good luck though and don't get me wrong with what I'm saying. Stihl is just an inherently more expensive saw than alot of others and since I'm poor, I always look at the whole value of a package. ;)

I'll agree the 7900 is a bad mama but not too many dealers around to get one. Ask about a 044/440 and get a hell yeah, ask about a 7900 and most say what???

Excellent power to weight ratio though. It fits nicely between the 440 and 660:clap:

My dealer had a new 440 collecting dust at the end of the shelf. After reading all about them here and seeing it sitting there I just couldn't stand it anymore! Brought it home and tossed the DP cover on. Short story shorter: What an all around great saw! Revs quick, good torque, light enough to limb, and didn't slow down with the bar burried. Can't wait to see what it's like once it's broke in! For size/weight it's not that much different from the 460, but for some reason it sure handles a lot better. Just an overall nice package. Glad I got one while I could.

I also picked up an 8-pin sprocket for it, but haven't tried it yet. Does anyone else step up? Does it have enough umph to pull it w/ 25" bar buried, or will it run out of steam?

It does well

It doesn't cut like the 7900 in bigger wood, but up to 24" I'd say it'll stand up to anything out there. Mine is an all around EXCELLENT saw. It's one I used to reach for all the time. There are the little things I like about the 7900 better than the stihl... If I could choose an excellent all around saw, and only one for all the time, I'd take the stihl cause of size, power, smoothness etc... When I'm really going to town bucking big logs with a 24" bar or so, my 7900 is my baby. My whole point was just that all the saws that are going end of life are kind of getting edged out. If your going to invest, get something you know will still be made in 5 yrs or so...
