You know you can't burn pine, your house will burn down 😧 .
That is a big branch.
LOL, I have no issues burning dry Pine. That branch got hauled off. 16 hours after that one fell this one from the same tree landed on the wires.

Hey KK YOU better get in line to get a woolly mammoth when they're available.
Fur coats for elephants are kinda pricy.
I hear they're easier to house break too.
Who's house? The owner of Chevron? Unfortunately, my house ain't quite big enough fir a Mammoth! Maybe a Mammoth/Elephant hybrid cross? But definitely not a registered full blooded Mamath! Nope! No way! Just not quite big enough.
Besides, I don't want any animal related to or that has Elephant blood in it. Not after reading Chippers post about logging Elephants!

Wow, you better be careful ;), I actually burned a couple pieces of spruce tonight :blob2: .
I had made a bunch of cuts into it for the noodles, the chickens like spruce noodles, all this talk about cherry, maybe I need to make some cherry noodles 😁.
Got 3 nice bags out of what I made.

I'm not a woodworker, that's why I asked.
Because when you mill it, it makes lumber like this,

AND, then you can make things like the clock I made below.

But most of all, many places are running out of cherry and the day is coming when there won't be any "decent" cherry left to mill, this I'm sure of!

Oh that's pretty! Looks a lot like some of the Western Red Cedar lumber I've milled out of beach logs!👍

You're right it does look about like cedar, but it's a lot harder than western cedar.....about like big leaf maple..... maybe a bit harder, but it works easier than big leaf once it's dry.
Cherry makes very nice lumber for finish work and cabinets etc.

It will probably be around 10 degrees when feb comes around lol.
If it's not too bad, I'd be up for dropping something:chainsaw:; but if it's real cold, we'd still be up for company :).
No worries bro. Yea February looking cold. But it's Michigan they can't figure out what it's gonna do tomorrow let alone a few weeks from now. I seen pics of people's flowers like tulips and daffodils coming up downstate 😳

My neighbor built this waterfall style coffee table fir me out of seven different species of wood he said. All from drift wood logs scrounged off the beach then milled. Apparently the top level with the Bear skull is Cherry wood. The level with the navigation chart, other bear skull and Oosik on it is Alakan Yellow Cedar. The base is Western Red Cedar. The small upper most level is some kind of exotic from South America or Asia. Very very hard and heavy!!! He was guessing it was off a section of some species of Apaton or Mahogany root. Apparently there is several different species of both. 🤷IMG_20230121_171637956.jpg

Roger.I assumed cherry was definitely harder tht cedar. Red Cedar is some of the softest wood Ive ever worked with. Alaskan Yellow Cedar not so much. Very dense fir a conifer! Tight growth rings and wood grain. Very slow growing and heavy when compared to Red Cedar or Sitka Spruce. If you've ever seen a picture of a totem in British Columbia or SE Alaska? It was most likely carved from a Yellow Cedar tree.

What's the displacement of that orange bad guy? I love seeing 16" stub bars on 50cc saws! That stubby looks to be 16"👍 My personal favorite fir a 50cc, 😍 but that's just me. After stepping down from a 20" to 16"on my MS260P. I will never go back to a 20" on that particular saw.👎

We only have granbergs. And biggest saw that we have for milling would be cs 590
Whats the make and displacement of a CS590?

I've got a couple Granbergs myself got my first one some years ago in 98 I believe. I hesitate to call them "mills"as they are so slow. I Refer to them as chain saw lumber making jigs. When I was younger in 98/99. I was 22-23 at the time. I Framed a 24' x 16' cabin with a sleeping loft out of rough cut Spruce lumber and sided it with red cedar lumber from beach logs. 👍 All milled with my 32" Granberg running an 066 pushing a 36" bar. I saved and used all the saw waste fir insulation Boy, that whole building project was a lot of work! The Cedar beach wood was horribly tough to mill because of all the jig set up and jig break break down time! I had to swap chains every pass because of the beach sand in the wood until I had a cant squared off! Anyone who's used an Alaska Mill knows the work involved Im talking about!. It was fun and I was younger and with me high school sweetheart so it was all good!👍

Id hav to say the funnest part about the project was felling and bucking the old WW2 abandoned power line creosote power poles for foundation piles. Then skidded them out the half mile through the swamp to get them to the old WW2 military road where my truck was. IMG_20230121_183925684.jpgIMG_20230121_183936579.jpg

I started in the fall of 98 just before the ground froze. IMG_20230121_190124599.jpg

We were living in the 16' x 16' by the middle of winter Come spring I did the 8' x 16' addition.IMG_20230121_190726361.jpgIMG_20230121_190840682_HDR.jpg

Interior and exterior chainsaw milled Red Cedar Siding. The only thing I bought was the nails, plywood skin, and rolled asphalt roofing. Used saw waste fir insulation. 👍IMG_20230121_191027601.jpg

I treated the exterior siding with linseed oil.

I learned at a young age. One must be the Jack of all trades When living remote in Alaska. Even if he's the master on none. (☝️Me, I'm guilty🤣) Be very rich, starve, or freeze to death. Those are your options!

Its STIHL standing and livable today! On my high school sweethearts parents property right down the road from my current property!👍 Her dead beat brother lives in it! 🤣🤣🤣 The sweethearts candle fire burnt out long ago. She's done been long gone fir over Twenty years. Married with Children.👍 That's how it is big time'n in a small town! 🤣😉

Im very grateful fir the power saw time and experience Ive aquired over the years. When I'm doing tree work for someone. They will often say "man your saw cuts fast! I want mine to cut like that! How come it doesn't? How do I get it to?" I just smile shurk my shoulders and say "Im not sure but Id start by making sure its sharp every time you pick it up to use it and every time you put it away. That's what I do" Then its usually a blank stare and an "Oh" 🤣🤣🤣

Yup, beach logs, and Alaska mills.
I've done a bunch of both, you speak the truth man.

It's only a 40cc saw, a husky 242xp, fun little saw that's a hard worker.
She got to stretch her legs a bit today on some red oak, ran a couple tanks thru it :chainsaw:.

Was up insulating the cabin Thurs + Fri, so I'm almost 20 pages behind, and with tax season rapidly approaching, I don't see me catching up, so if there is anything important that I missed, please let me know.

No pics, but I'll be up again this Fri. (hopefully). S/B a good snowfall about then up there. Got about an inch up there on Fri., there was nothing down at the bottom. They are predicting about 10" (on the bottom) this Fri., so we may see a good amount up on the hill. I'm 2 miles in on a dirt logging road that does not get plowed.

Well! 🤔 Looks like I better cancel that order I have on the Elephant and go back to shopping fir a skid steer or tractor I reckon! DANG IT!!!
Just go back to the first post by the founder of this thread and you will know how to haul your wood!!!

Nice job on the cabin KK, now I know why you understood the work in what I did.

Mutual respect!!!
Most definitely! However, Id have to say I have a little bit more envy twords your cabin due to its size and your age when you built it! 🤣🤣 Don't get me wrong. Im not saying you were old! Im just saying you weren't 22! 😉 Definitely much respect Mustang!👍
