Awesome. Have your rails ever bowed. They look heavy duty. Just wondering because I was going to just use a ladder but I like that set up better.
My mill should be arriving in a couple weeks

Haven't noticed any bowing.

man that's really spalted...what's the story on the log? been sitting around for a bit?

Don't know if I'd call that spalted. They did have some but it's not really noticeable in the pictures. Most of what you are seeing is just the wood color of the pecan. Fresh cut pecan looks the same way.

The log has been sitting in a stack, off the ground for 9-10 months maybe. You can see one of the stacks of the logs I have left in the last picture behind the skid steer.

Rot and Stained badly!

I've cut open a few pecan logs, and most if not all look like that. And it certainly wasn't rot in mine....stained, maybe? Not sure what you call it, but I don't think it's stained.

Great fun slabbing pecan and getting to see those amazing colors!

What do you have planned for those purty slabs?

The sapwood is nothing but stain! I'm a trained lumber inspecter, trust me that is stain!!

Most of us aren't inspectors. You can see that in the logs we choose to mill. I'll take a stained log over a clear log any day of the week.

What type of stain is it? Sherwin-Williams or one of those off-brands?

And what is an inspecter? I know what a inspector is....

Somebody pays you to give them your opinion?

Mr. HE:cool:

No they pay me for my expertise. And I'm only human and misspell once in a while INSPECTOR is correct EXCUSE ME!

If you guys don't want my opinion let me know! But for your consideration, I've been in the hardwood industry for 25 years, including 20 as owner of my own mill. Sawed about 65 million board feet of lumber in those 20 years. Trained as a lumber INSPECTOR at The NHLA(National Hardwood Lumber Assoc.). And I grew up in the industry as my dad was also an INSPECTOR for 40 years, and my grandfather had his own mill for nearly 20 years.

So I have a little knowledge, I'm willing to share, but just say the word and I'll be happy to pack it in!

I think the way you worded your opinion could have been done a little more tactful. What you can't see when you read something on the internet is a persons tone, or facial expressions. It easy to be taken the wrong way.

Most of the pictures posted on here are someones prized possessions. They have spent the day behind a chainsaw and can still taste the 2 cycle mix and hear the rumble of the saw.

Your welcome to your opinion because its a forum, but you have to listen to everyone opinion of what you say. I know because I've stuck my foot in my mouth a few times before.

Welcome to Arboristsite.

Well said!

The same problem exists with text messaging..I couldn't count the time I've wasted trying to explain what I meant with a text message....so that's why I turned off that "feature" on my calling plan!:hmm3grin2orange:

Pecan and Hickory are treated the same under the grading rules and are often mixed together, as they really are the same species. In fact, all lumber rulers(a measuring device used by inspectors) are made of pecan/hickory. I've seen lots of hickory and a small amount of pecan, you can't see a discernable difference. The sapwood of pecan/hickory should be bright white. Stain is brought on by the fungal decay of wood, and is not an applied product, at least the way I was talking about it. We have at least three subspecies of hickory here in Michigan, Pignut,Shagbark, and bitternut. I have not seen a for sure pecan tree here in Michigan, but they must be around, esp. in the southern part of the state(lots more hickory down there than around my area).

By the way Hickory/pecan is probably the fastest staining wood around. The logs need to be sawed in a hurry or they stain in a matter of days, in warmer temps. The maples(hard and soft) also stain very fast, but from my expiriences H/P is the fastest!
