Having seen it mentioned in http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/160442.htm i decided to do some investigating. The IPLs aren't much help. I found a thread from last year on here that discussed them; http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/110574.htm
AS member bennn*e said that 029/039 had flippy caps after mid 98' from serial number 140 158 284. However, no evidence was really shown.
A number of the Stihl websites have a product history timeline, here is the Canada entry for 98';
" Special tank filler caps
New special-purpose filler caps for fuel and oil tanks are introduced for the first time on the model 029 and 039 chainsaws. These caps can now be opened and closed without requiring tools."

I know some people would interpret this to mean the orange caps but as far as i am aware only the fuel tank was fitted with an orange cap and the article clearly states that caps were for both fuel and oil tanks.e.g.
The uncertainty lies in the interchangability of parts and frankensaws so pictures alone cannot be taken as proof. Having searched on google i found several 029 supers that appeared to have flippy caps, e.g
As i have said this is not proof, however, what intrigued me was the black circle at the centre of the flippy caps. All the so called 029Ss i was seeing with flippy caps seemed to have black centred ones.
So was this an early type of flippy cap?
Here is another 029S with the caps;
It was being sold and was stated as being year 2000 (note the silver sticker on the brake handle).
Unfortunately, none of the pictures were clear enough to be able to read the silver sticker to see the actual model. I thought the silver stickers arrived with the ms series.Then i found this;
Stihl 029 super - Kleingeräte, Werkzeuge & Maschinen
Here is one of the pictures;
You can see on the brake that it is a 2000 model and on the bottom left of the brake you can appear to see the letters 029S where the model number usually is. Well it is certainly not a ms290 etc as this is 5 characters and the sticker only shows 4 and you can see the model starts with a 0.
To conclude all the 029 supers i have found that have a green label on the brake handle have the orange fuel cap. It would appear that i have found examples of saws that are 029 supers that have a silver sticker on the brake handle and black centred flippy caps (the last example you can only see the top of the flippy cap, so we don't know the colour of the centre). I find it highly coincidental that the only examples of 029 supers i can find that have silver stickers also have flippy caps and the flippy caps are the same black centred ones.
Not exactly conclusive i know and before anyone asks... yes i was bored:hmm3grin2orange:
