I was under the impression it was the "Wild Thang" purple Poulan?

The only time I see the second ring of any benefit is on a saw that receives no maintenance and the top ring is shot. IMHO, I'd rather go back in there and replace the single ring and/or complete piston.

Exactly, there really is no need for the second ring IMHO.

It's an EPA thing, nothing to do with performance.

This was done on the largest saws way before and after epa stuck their noses in saws. I should have used the word preferred, instead of necessary.

It is, but it has nothing to do with that Craftsman/McCulloch saw.

That is something to consider. I've heard from a few Husky guys that Stihls tend to hold up better under harsh and uncompromising usage. (Abuse?). Not necessarily a good thing per se nor even a great test as to say which is better in general but a lot of stock is placed into so called torture tests. (Glocks and AK47s). I unfortunately am not the primary operator of the saws I service so I look at things a bit differently.

What do you mean by 2 different ring lands in the cylinder ?

Consider the metal in the cylinder the land and the ports the lakes. The ends of the ring(s) on two cycle engines have a peg so they stay in one spot and that spot must be land top to bottom.

It's also permissible to reverse rings,ie, top ring in bottom and bottom ring in top as a general procedure when you have an older saw apart, or one that has seen alot of use.
