Arizona Mesquite

I am planning to be in southern Arizona later this month. Does anyone know if I will be able to find some mesquite to cut and bring home? I know the ranchers don't care for the tree/shrub, I suspect that you can't cut it on public land? The sawmill that I checked with, seemed expensive. I am mostly looking for turning wood.

Any info. would be appreciated.
