I know I know, another chain thread. :deadhorse:

I've read tons of the chain threads in the FAQ, read on Baileys and any other site I could google. The problem is I can't find good pictures to explain the chain type differences.

Here's my problem: My neighbor is giving me a bunch of 14' logs/wood he cut down a few years ago but it's pretty dirty. I only have full chisel chains for my 2 bigger saws (jonsered 2077 and husky 262xp) so I wanted to get some semi-chisel. I went to two different sawshops today and asked for the same thing at both, 72 drivers of full comp semi-chisel, 3/8 pitch and .050 gauge. The Husky chain came from the first shop and the Oregon chain came from the other. The second shop billed me for 72 drivers of Oregon 72JG which I know isn't right. I should've gotten 72DP right?

Anyway, here are some pictures of the 2 chains I got. The Husky chain isn't even the right gauge, it's .058 according to my caliper. :bang: Freakin shops.
Can anyone correctly ID the chains for me so I know what i have? What should semi-chisel actually look like?

Yes 72DP is 3/8th x 050/1.3 semi chisel chain, the only other semi chisel listed is 72RD but that is a Ripping Chain. LP,LG, etc are all listed as Chisel. Cannot help with the Husky chain but I understand that it is Oregon manufactured

thats all full chisel go to a stihl dealer and get 72 x 33RMC OR RM

The Husky chain is H48, which is the same as Oregon 73LGX, chisel and .058 (as you said). Husky doesn't seem to offer the DP in .050, only in .058 (H54).

I am not able to see clearly if the Oregon chain is 72LGX or 72DP - but suspect that one is LGX as well (.050 anyway).

Maybe this will help...

You can buy other brands of semi-chisel from online / catalog retailers. The issue comes when only buying a few loops. it becomes either more expensive or a wash in terms of cost when the shipping gets figured in.

Here's the bigger question ....... If the OPE guys did not supply what you spec'd out, why did you pay for it?

:msp_confused:

Well I didn't pay at the first shop actually. I asked for some ripping chain too but the guy said they just filed down normal chain and it would take a while. So he let me walk with the Husky chain in the pictures and said to pay when I go pick up the ripping chain.

At the second shop (which is much more down to earth and laid back) they gave me that Oregon chain. I specifically asked if it was DP and he said no, it's JG which is full comp. If I wanted skip, it would be LG. I also know now that that statement is false, LG/LGX is full comp chisel. Neither are semi-chisel. I'll keep the Oregon chain since I don't mind extra full chisel laying around, but the .058 stuff will go back and I'll stop buying chain from them.

I asked about ripping chain at the second shop and they said the same thing, they don't stock it but they can file normal chain down to whatever degrees and it's the same thing. There happened to be a guy from a third shop (Stihl dealer) standing there and he said they stock actual rip chain but that I probably didn't need it for ripping one log. He said just lay it flat and basically noodle the length of it. I'm wanting to make a bench out of a small log. I'm thinking full chisel skip or semi-skip or whatever it's called would be best to help with clearing the noodles.

So yeah, I should've been smarter and known what they handed me wasn't right, but I honestly didn't know what semi-chisel looked like and I figured a SAW SHOP would give me the right stuff. I think I'll go to the Stihl dealer and go with the RM/RMC as suggested. Thanks for all the input.

No kidding, especially when it needs to be shipped to North Pole, AK. There are 4 saw shops in Fairbanks that I know of. Only one is actually called "XXX's saw shop", the other 3 are more multi-purpose stores. Two of them sell Stihl and one sells Husky/Jonsered/Echo/Shindaiwa.

My local Stihl dealer doesn't carry 33RMC or RM only full chisel. :frown:

Well known story - all dealers around here (regardless of brand) stock only chisel in 3/8, and only semi chisel in .325 - and the catalogs recommend the same. I have to order all .325 chain I buy, since I hardly have any use for semi chisel....:msp_rolleyes:

my sig line has a pic

semi looks like the one on the left

I've looked at that picture in your signature many times. I was never sure what round/square meant though. If I understand now, the leftmost would be semi-chisel and the middle would be full chisel, right? What do you call the far right?

So you are admitting to using Stihl chain? :evil grin:

the right one is square ground. It's sharpened with a 6 sided file.

I know the labels on the pic suck but I didn't make it. I would label that pic Semi, Chisel, Square. The cutter on the left is actually more like Chipper; as in fully rounded cutter. Semi is actually shaped more like chisel, but the corner is rounded off, that's why it's called 'semi' chisel. The two intersecting edges are straight but the corner has a radius to it. Chipper has no straight edges, it's just a full curve. I don't think you can even buy true chipper in 3/8 I have only seen it in 1/2" pitch chain.

If you do decide to order chain I highly recommend the woodland pro semi chisel sold by Bailey's. It's nade by Carlton and it's good stuff and much cheaper than Stihl. I know shipping chain gets expensive but I always need a bunch of stuff from them when I stop and think about it. Load up on chains, rims, drums, files and the shipping cost gets spread out and isn't too bad.
