I have only seen Spencer tapes used here.
Everybody from the log cutters, buckers and the knot bumpers.
I had a old one my dad used for years, I took it out with my grandson and my son in law.
I was bucking up the firewood and my SIL was marking the log with a Hatchet and my tape..
You can guess what happened..

Reminds me of a story

Bout a month ago a buddy asked me to drop quite a few trees for him, and bought a new husky loggers tape. ($65 in this part of the world) We had to buck em to specific lengts so he could get them cut up for his barn. About the second log we bucked he measured it and i started cutting, and he just janked on it. :bang: Was lucky enough to cut the last unmarked 20" in half so I replaced that with some kevlar string and we were good to go.

If you are now talking about the logger's tape, you loosen the little screws around the edge. Carefully. Those screws get lost very easily. Don't take them out! That loosens up the spring. Then you twist it clockwise, but not too tight or the upper limits of the tape will not spool out. When you get it so you think it is OK, tighten up all the little screws.

Another caution, when using one of those tapes, it is easy to "walk out" the tape and it will break off at the very end. You can make an emergency repair in the field if you have a little screwdriver and a knife or awl. Simply undo the screw, punch another hole in the end of the tape, screw that in, and reel it in.

You'll also want to put some tape on the end that the nail is on. Most folks tape that part up about 6 inches and it keeps it out and handier to pull on, and also strengthens it a bit.

Of course, the downside to that is that it will get hung up on stuff. We were working in a snakey place and we heard a scream and then "Old King Zipper got me!" Our snake phobic boss got his tape hung up without realizing it, it let go and the nail got him. He thought he'd been bit by a rattler. That was the laugh of the day.

WD40 will clean pitch off and keep it in good shape. And no, despite what loggers say, the broken tapes do not burn up in slash piles or instantly disolve in road ditches, or in the woods, or on the roads.
