I noticed the other day that my muffler was a little loose so I decided it was a good opportunity to try a muffler mod. I bought this saw brand new in 2000 and I changed the spark plug once and cleaned the air filter, maybe twice.... Never thought much about it, it always ran great! I've cut probably upwards of 100 or so cord since then for firewood. It was my only saw until recently... Then I got CAD... But I digress.

So I pulled the muffler and checked the piston, looks great!! Saw could use a good cleaning though.

The muffler looked like this.

So I pried the baffle out a bit with a screwdriver.

Then I grabbed it with a pair of pliers and twisted until it broke free.

.
Then I spread the outlet baffle a bit to give it a bit more room.

The spark screen slid right back where it belongs. Not sure if it would be better to eliminate it. Any thoughts??

My spark plug looked like this.

Does it look good or a little lean???
Compression was about 163 cold.

I put it back together and fired it up.
I had to richen up the low setting a little for it to idle good.
Then I did a few cuts. It sounded to me like it was 4 stroking out of the wood and smoothing out in the cut with no adjustment to the high???
I took a video just not sure how to post it at the moment?

Any thoughts on why it didn't seem to need any adjustment on the high?
Maybe I had it to rich already? Plug didn't look it though???

Ok looks like the video uploaded but the audio is missing??? It seems to work fine in YouTube???

Video worked fine. Saw sounds OK to me. If you're worried, richen it too far, then dial it back in.

PERFECT! EXCELLENT! Top end fuel mix has always been the same for me.
Keep the screen in or replace with wider mesh.
Ok great good to know. Seems like many need to richen up their mix a bit. I guess every saw is different...

Sounds good to me, too, and runs well, also. Have you cut off the carb adjusters limiting tabs? Easy to do with a pair of wire cutters and maybe some file cleanup after. Then you can really adjust it enough to tell when it is right. I have the same saw and did a similar muffler mod recently. Mine is about the same vintage. Have you had to replace your fuel line yet? Mine wore out below the grommet...

Funny I thought I would need to do more adjusting so I took a razor blade to them. I had about 3/4 turn left to go on high without removing them. But turns out about 1/4 turn out on the low and it runs great.
I did notice that when I rolled the saw onto the clutch side it revved slightly at idle though? Does that mean my seals are going?

Hope not. When I was troubleshooting weird behavior on mine that was a potential. But so many 55 owners had trouble with that fuel line I looked there first and that was it. Much easier fix. Tank vent probs seem common, too. Your saw seems to run fine - mine was all over the place...

Yeah she has never skipped a beat. First time I noticed a change in revs while tilting the saw too. I begun checking every time I run the saw now, (since joining AS) [emoji3], that and for four stroking under no load and clearing up in the cut.
