Hey guys im new here and looking for my first good chainsaw. My dad has a old stihl farmboss 041 that still runs strong and im looking for something that will be good and last a lifetime. I was looking at a stihl farmboss ms290 i can get that for around $307 18" bar

Should i save my money or will this be a good saw?

Im looking for something for cutting up tress and stuff on my property.

Thanks

Kyle

should be ok

velcome
if you are cutting less the 4 cords of wood i will work. if you think you need more power the ms 390 20" bar is also a good buy. one thing to keep in mind these sawz are not pro grade so you must be on top of the saw maintenance. also if
you feel comfortable with a saw you may want a non safety chain. also beware of CAD one saw today tomorrow 2 and then it is down hill from there

:givebeer:

Just get a MS361, and get it over with - 290/310/390 is much less quality than you really want - and price difference is way to small to worry about........

This is coming from a Troll that has never ran a 290. It makes a fine firewood saw. It isnt Stihl's #1 selling saw for many years running for no reason. Sure it isnt professional grade. Are you an arborist? Are you a logger? Ok, 290 will suit ya fine.

Nice pic.

Have a neighbor who has used a 290 for years. He even stores his saw in a tree for nights at a time, when his bar gets pinched. The thing is beat to death, but it always starts.

He has cut oodles of cords of wood and really enjoys his saw.

So, from that perspective, I would also have to saw it is a fine firewood saw.

I'm not sure what to make of the "intellicarb" and until it has been in use for a WHILE, I want NOTHING to do with it.
That being said, I have an 029Super (The forerunner of the 290) and I have no complaints whatever with it. Plenty of power for its size, not a boat anchor, starts when I ask it to, does the job it was made to do without complaint, parts are EVERYWHERE (our local PHARMACY sells Stihl parts) relatively easy to maintain and work on. In all honesty it is one of the best all around "homeowner/firewood" saws going.
Any saw will be troublesome if you don't do your part and cutting small amounts of wood/trimming/lawn cleanup are not the ideal conditions for long term trouble free saw life.
They make it real easy to not sharpen chains, not clean out/off sawdust and dirt and maybe worst of all leave gas stored in the tank for long periods.

Yeah I would love to get a MS361 but i really cant afford that much right now any used saws I should take a look at? Around the $300 price

Just get the 290. You'll get a new saw, a warranty, and that new saw smell.
If you go for the 290, Make sure your dealer goes over the saw with you. Also, make sure he shows you how to start it. And you should start it in front of him. Sometimes, those saws can be tricky to learn how to start. Once you get it down though, its a breeze.

for a little extra id get the makita 6401....i have the 290, bought it a few years ago when i didnt know any better, its just way heavy, it is by no means under powered, but its power to weight ratio is lacking....ive cut some big oaks with the 290 with no prob. but i switched the .325 out for .375 stihl chisel chain. u wont be happy limbing with it.

+1

Keep the .325 chain on it get a 16" and 20" bar AND NON SAFETY CHAIN(if you are safe) and it will rock for a long time OR until CAD kicks in.

I think you did great, that's a pro saw. That's what I would have had to recommend besides the 361. I don't buy non-pro saws, but that's me.

The 026/MS260 isn't quite as powerful as a MS290, but isn't nearly as heavy either. The saw looks to be barely used, and they're pushing $500 new for the 260 and more for the 260 Pro. Its a great saw.

Ya did good!

Yep! Ya done good! The 260 is a great saw. Much lighter than the 290.

Once you get used to it, you might want to look into doing a muffler mod. It really wakes this saw up. It's VERY easy to do. But you will need to adjust the carb, or have it done for you once the mod is done. All the difference in the world, and it really doesn't make it that much louder. Lots of info about how that's done in past threads, but if you have questions about that, just holler. Lots of 260 fans here that'd love to help you out.

Welcome to the site and congrats on your new saw. It's just the first of many if you hang around here too long!!

Some years ago the MS260s had fixed H jets in the carbs - hopefully it isn't one of those.
They came to their senses pretty fast, so most likely not......:biggrinbounce2:
