How do I determine the depth to sharpen at?? Just picked up a file-n-joint recently.
Free hand filing with round file has lead to less than optimal results. Time to get more serious.

A good starting point is 20% (or 1/5th.) of the file above the top plate.
If you want more or less hook for your cutting conditions you can adjust accordingly.
