That would be a sassafras my friend. My favorite lumber! We sawed some today at the mill...I just love that stuff! My Mother had one uproot, it was too small to be marketed so I cut it for fire wood, you talkin' about a beautiful smell in the house! It busts so easy, your maul will just glide through. As far as smelling like witch hazel, I wouldn't say that, but man it smells waaaay better than any other lumber at a tie mill! :D

This is my first post on this site and it looks good.
Sassafras is best identified in the winter by its roots or twigs. The twigs are stout, green; buds generally smooth, solitary, and more times than not aromatic when cut. Make sure the leaf scars are not forming a ring around the bud.
