Hey Guys,

i went up to my property today to cut up some wood on the ground and removed some small trees to get ready for my buddy who is going to put a large oak on the ground for me.

I'm wanting to make some chunks for smoking on the egg and I was wondering exactly what I have.

I believe the 2 pcs on the left are hickory and the 2 on the right are oak.

Please tell me if I'm wrong. THX in advance

From an Ohio point of veiw,,,,No....

From your location I really can't say...

Trees vary quite a bit from one region to another. My father in law in Florida has some hickories that look NOTHING like those in Ohio.

My buddies and I have a standing joke around here. If your not sure what it is.... It must be Ironwood!:)

Thanks for the replies guys.

here are the split pictures, hope this helps

I know that without having a leaf, it's hard to identify in winter by the bark alone unless you've been doing it for years.

possibly a hickory species but my guess is leaning towards poplar

Black gum is almost impossible to split so you can take it off your list of possibles.
you got that right, black gum does'nt split it either crushes or you saw it.
once its dry you can load a good size piece but its just not worth the effort for firewood.IMO
