I have a newbie question for you guys. My chain is a 3/8" Stihl Safety chain on a 361. I am using a 13/64 file but picked up the wrong file giude. I got the guide fot the 3/8 PMN, 1/4 and 3/8 PM.

Like I said, I run a 3/8. Can I still use this guide with the right size file or do I need to go back and get the guide that comes with the 3/8 kit? the Stihl part numbers are:

5605 750 4327 - The one I have
5605 750 4329 - The actual part number that is called for.

Here is a link to the page where I got them: http://www.stihlusa.com/chainsaws/acc_filing.html

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to A.S. Don't worry, plenty of other 'mis-guided' souls here.

The file guide should match the diameter of the file. Not only does it help you hold the file at the correct angles, it sets the file at the correct cutting depth relative to the cutters.

That said, you would still be able to use it, but you will not get the exact cutter shape intended by the manufacturer.

As long as it is new, take it back and get the right size for your file.
