longer bar downside

I just got my cs 590. Shhhh don't tell the spouse.

I really like a long bar so I can keep the tip out of the wood. I know it must be bad technique but frequently when I get the tip buried the saw bucks back a lot.

So I bought a 24 inch for the gal. Reading lots of comments I seem to hear that the longer bar slows the saw down.

Now of course I would expect it to slow the saw down when buried in more wood but how about the difference between a 20 and 24 inch bar when cutting a 18 inch limb.

In other words is there only a power penalty for a longer bar when its buried in the larger wood that it supports.

I dont think you would really notice.
One advantage is it will stay sharp a little longer. More cutters .

Technically, a longer bar will put more load on the engine in or out of the wood because you are pulling a longer chain with more weight - not much, but more. As Merc_man said, it's unlikely you will notice. You could also go to semi or full skip chain to reduce the load.

Qne thing to check is the oiler putting out enough as modern saws some are a bjt "stingey" on oil output

20" vs 24", both cutting 18" wood? I doubt you'll see much difference at all.

i was a bit concerned about running the 60cc saws with the 24" till i tried it.




as long as you have a sharp chain and keep everything in shape a 24" should be no problem.

As long as the longer bar weight doesn't effect the balance of the saw to much, those couple inches of extra reach can come in pretty handy sometimes.

Yeah i will keep that 24 inch on there. I use my 450 for 18" and smaller.

Some 60cc saw have the torque, some not so much. The 590 will pull a 24" bar just fine.

Don't need to bend over as much to cut smaller limbs near the ground
