I've used a Husqvarna axe and thought it was pretty sweet. Very well made, great balance, nice handle, pretty light. It was the 26 incher from this page http://www.usa.husqvarna.com/node3253.aspx?nid=45730
About $45 from my local dealer. It's smaller than a splitting axe, more what I would call a limbing axe. You might try that one or one of their smaller models.
I can highly recomend it! Small enough for light work but through the convex blade form splitting capability all out of proportion! Absolutly fantastic!
It was a present from my girlfriend 5 years ago after a trip to Finnland. We were camping at a lake and this old fellow living there was choping his wood with the same model. I helped him out for about 2hrs chopping wood. (We got dinner. )
That really convinced me. Thin edge but thick in the back. With the stuburn pieces stick it in, take the whole block with the axe turn it around and hit with the backside of the axe. With the momentum of the wood every piece split itself in one strick.
