What is a good hatchet for splitting 1X6's and 2x4's off of pallets for starter wood?

I always have liked the Estwing hammers and hand tools. They make an nice large hachett.

I like the 14" hatchet that Fiskars makes, very sharp and light. Works great for making kindling. Doesnt like nails tho.

I've used a Husqvarna axe and thought it was pretty sweet. Very well made, great balance, nice handle, pretty light. It was the 26 incher from this page http://www.usa.husqvarna.com/node3253.aspx?nid=45730
About $45 from my local dealer. It's smaller than a splitting axe, more what I would call a limbing axe. You might try that one or one of their smaller models.

I like the one piece Estwing also. I use their wedges-American made-on the big pieces so I can get it upon the splitter:chainsaw: .

This is what I have been using since the last 5 years!

I can highly recomend it! Small enough for light work but through the convex blade form splitting capability all out of proportion! Absolutly fantastic!

It was a present from my girlfriend 5 years ago after a trip to Finnland. We were camping at a lake and this old fellow living there was choping his wood with the same model. I helped him out for about 2hrs chopping wood. (We got dinner. :) )

That really convinced me. Thin edge but thick in the back. With the stuburn pieces stick it in, take the whole block with the axe turn it around and hit with the backside of the axe. With the momentum of the wood every piece split itself in one strick.
