I'm not an engine builder, to me it's scientific. Who wants to walk me through it?

Buy some electrical solder .032" diameter, stuff it in the spark plug hole with the piston a little ways down, then bring the piston up and smash it. Then measure.

Never heard of anyone using solder. I have some (not sure of diameter off top of my head) Ok what's next after that?

Make sure it's not acid core solder !
Good call! I think it's rosin? Does that sound right? I do as little soldering as possible, I'm not very good at it, don't have a steady hand at all.

What's the rest of the steps? I'd try to search but everytime I do I get nothing but completely irrelevant results. I don't know if it's the site or tapatalk app doing that but I don't have a computer and using the full web version of the browser doesn't work well on my phone. Any help would be great thanks!

Just run the piston up near tdc, bend a curve in the solder insert in plug hole toward the side( you want to be to the cylinder edge above the pin to limit piston rock) til you feel it touch the side then roll the piston thru tdc. Then measure .020-.022 would be good.

I aim for .015" on the 036/ms360 saws but most of the builders here say .018" is the smallest squish gap. Many times on that saw you can remove the base gasket and get .015"
Then you need sealer that's resistant to gas and oil. My favorite is Three Bond, there's also Dirko, Yamabond, Honda Bond, etc. etc.

Loctite 5999 should do the trick? We use it at work and our Nick name for it is 3 bond. Guessing due to 3 9's. Sounds easy enough. Do I need to worry about the rings hitting a new carbon edge they haven't hit before in a salvage cylinder? Do I need to adjust the ports to compensate?

We use it to seal every hot and oily surface on Cummins engines at the factory, 500-600/day like that.... I'll see what I have when I get to the shop. Port adjustments?

That was my assumption, better safer than sorry. Timing will not be affected enough to matter?

The flywheel/coil determines ignition timing..........port timing will not change much at all by removing the base gasket. If squish is huge and you mill off some of the cylinder base that will change things

Is rosin core not good to use?
Basically I'm advancing the tdc placement a tiny bit, thus theoretically retarding ignition timing slightly. Am I incorrect or is it just not enough to matter for this application?
