I scored this today. She's pretty nice, been looking for one for quite some time but they just dont seem to really exist out here on the east coast.
Im hoping blsnelling will spot this post and chime in on it since it came from him according to the previous owner. He lives in western mass, named Dan. I think hea a member on here as well but didnt catch his screen name. Anyways Brad, if you recall this critter can you tell me what has been done to it? I know its been ported and muff modded, was curious if there was any dome reworking done to it.
Internals all look good and shes puffin 155 psi.
I NEED a clutch drum though, this one is all fuggard up, almost looks like it was wfo with the chain brake on for a minute or two. Anyone know where i can get even a used one? Nothing on ebay and i stopped by 2 stihl dealers on the way home and nada.
Here she is, im psyched, ive wanted one for a long time.

It def does not have a popup now that i take a better peek at the piston. I believe he said he bought the entire saw from you, but who knows and im not sure how long ago. Either way im tickled to have it.
If anyone has a clutch drum they wanna part with let me know!

If'n it's been ported- isn't 155 low for that saw? What's the target compression # on a 84?
Pretty sure 155 is right on, porting dont bump the comp numbers, ditching the base gasket, decking the bottom of the jug and popup pistons are what give it more comp. i like the 155 number, less strain on the crank bearing :)

Carb questions

Ok, i fired this thing up and it seemed like it was starving for fuel, pulled the carb and i see on the diaphream that there is no groove on the end of it to hook it onto the needle foot. I cant tell if it broke off and get rounded over causing it to starve for fuel? Or do these come sometimes as just a button with no groove in some kits?

That diaphragm isn't supposed to hook on the needle. It just bounces on it to open and close the needle. Make sure you put the diaphragms back on it the correct order. If you don't have an ipl, get one. check your fuel filter and fuel and impulse lines. Clean the carb out good with a spray can of carb cleaner. NO COMPRESSED AIR. real easy to damage that expensive hard to find carb with compressed air. For cheap insurance get a new carb kit. It looks like the diaphragm is a little warped. @ $12 its worth doing while you got it torn apart

Ok, cleaned it out really good, i did notice a small amount of water beading up on the diaphram while i had it apart so it def got a wiff of water. I cleaned the fuel filter and checked over everything. Now she fires right up great, revs great, BUT the idle was a smidge high, tried adjusting it only to find it was already backed right off the throttle stop. Checked linkage and butterfly etc to find all is good and has play in the linkage and the butterfly is closing completely so none of that is causing it to hang up. I even tried feeding more fuel on the low side to get it to simmer down with no luck.
To cover the obvious i have: checked intake boot, fuel and impulse line, checked the cyl base bolts, checked the clutchside crank seal, (ran out of time to pull the flywheel side, will tomm)
Fuel is fresh at 32:1 which is what i run in all my saws as well as my powersports.
Any ideas, tips? I dont feel like its an air leak, but maybe,...seems to be running consistant and not erratic like they usually do with an air leak, just a tad high on the idle. Thoughts?

Put a new plug in. Bosch wsr6f. See how it acts. I always put a carb kit in saws that are new to me. Its elimination of possibilities. If those don't help, I'd say its a good time to do a pressure/vac test.

So it was you that bought the saw. Why I ought, right in the kissa. Congrats on the new saw, hope you find the parts you need for it.

10-4 on the tank vent, has a new plug. Im gonna pop the flywheel and check that seal later. If all that seems good ill try spraying parts down with ether to find any leaks, and if i get no hits with that ill pressure test it. This ethanol crap really screws things up, attracts water and screws up carbs. Ive had a few that i simply could not get to function correctly even though they have been completely stripped and cleaned. Sonic washer is high on my to buy list now.
Ill report back later after i fiddle around with it!

Check and see if the tank vent still has grub screws in it. If so, get rid of them. All you need is the little orange valve inside the tank. I burnt up the topend on an 084 because of those lowsey little things. That could be the saw you have. If thatso, thst was a new topend on that saw. Of course, that was 2-3 years ago too.

Makes sence because the jug and piston look new. And yes the 2-3 yrs ago seems to correspond with what the previous owner said. He only put about 10 tanks through it since he got it.
I just came home for lunch an looked at the vent, the lil vent screws are gone, sounds like we jogged your memory!
I chatted with the previous owner this morn to see if it always idled high, he said no and would have no reason to tell me that if it wasnt true. Its been parked for a year now, i think its something in the carb....

Ok i screwed around with it some more. Today i was flopping it around side to side and it revs up when laid on either side. I didnt catch that last night because it was sitting flat while running. I know the clutch got hot, and now that i wiggle the crank hard i can feel a slight bump, very slight but irregardless im not gonna risk ruining it,..wtf. Guess i gotta split her down and give her some new bearings and seals.
Went to pop the flywheel off to find this uses a bigger puller than my 066 so i have to get one of those. I did spy some sneaky sneaky ignition advance stuff though!

That bump could be from a number of things, if it doesn't have any radial play it is likely fine. I have an 084 that has similar issues as yours, and I'm almost 100% sure it's a carb issue. She will start and tune fine on the high, but doesn't like to idle consistently and will stall sometimes. The saw holds pressure and vacuum just fine, all the lines are good and I eliminated the grub screws as well.

Not sure what in these carbs causes these issues, internal valve maybe??:dunno:

Does yours act differently if flopped around? Whenever i had one do that before it always ended up being a crank seal. I have not pressure tested it yet, was gonna hose it down with ether to find the leak but have seemingly run out. Ether usually finds leaks pretty good while its running.
