My new to me 084

Does yours act differently if flopped around? Whenever i had one do that before it always ended up being a crank seal. I have not pressure tested it yet, was gonna hose it down with ether to find the leak but have seemingly run out. Ether usually finds leaks pretty good while its running.
Crank seals are seldom the problem with 084s. The service manual points the finger at them but my experience has been that about everything else is the problem instead. The last thing in line looking for help on an old 084 is the crank seals.

Ok i screwed around with it some more. Today i was flopping it around side to side and it revs up when laid on either side. I didnt catch that last night because it was sitting flat while running. I know the clutch got hot, and now that i wiggle the crank hard i can feel a slight bump, very slight but irregardless im not gonna risk ruining it,..wtf. Guess i gotta split her down and give her some new bearings and seals.
Went to pop the flywheel off to find this uses a bigger puller than my 066 so i have to get one of those. I did spy some sneaky sneaky ignition advance stuff though!

That's a factory part, made for two different coils. That would be WAY too much for a timing advance mod. When advancing the timing, we're talking only 1/3-1/2 the width of the key.

Ahhh, i follow ya now. Ive never fiddled around with an 88-84 before so i just assumed that was something done to alter timing, guess i shoulda realized that was too much.

The more i look at the bearings i think that bump i felt was indeed tdc and a little bit of movement in the piston ring in its groove. It turns over nice and smooth. The seal looks new and is nice and plush, in fact everything on this thing looks new.

So would the carb have a part in the saw surging to higher rpms when tipped side to side??
As someone else mentioned is there some sort of valve that can screw up in the carb?

084 clutch

Hey Moose, if you're still looking for a clutch for your saw go to the Auctions section. I was just on there and saw a mostly complete 084 in a box. He was asking for an offer on it.

I just went back to it and it said Listing Closed. I didn't notice that the first time.

Must be gone already. You, maybe?

Appreciate the heads up, na it wasnt me that got it, alot of ppl on here and alot of guys that are all over this big stuff.
I found myself a new clutch already so im all set in that dept. thanks!

Ok, i kinda threw this thing on the back burner while i was waitin for some parts to come in.
I stripped the carb down and gave it to the miss so she could ultrasonic clean it at work. Threw in a new carb kit, assembled and still the same...ok, so i vac tested and its leaking bad, i then grab a can of either and spray down the clutch, stays running...spray down the intake, still running, spray down the cyl base, still running, douche the flywheel and bam! Dead!got the puller and found the culprit

Im surprised it even ran. I gotta check my parts bin and see if i got one, or just order one up.
