I have interest in receiving training as an arborist. I have some limited chainsaw safety and skill training, and have successfully completed some rudimentary bucking and felling jobs.

Can someone recommend a reputable training facility or program for beginner arborists in NE Ohio? Or, I might ask, what is the best way for a novice to go about acquiring skills as a tree person?

As far as the work goes, you would probably get no better experience than hands on. I'd suggest trying to hire on with one of the top residential tree services in your area. Make sure they are reputable. I'm not knocking the smaller guys because I first started out with one myself (as well as being a small service). You will have broader knowledge base to learn from with more climbers to work with. If you just learn from one guy you only learn one way to do things. If you hire on with a larger service with multiple crews you will more than likely work with a few climbers that you can learn from.

Times are hard right now and it might be tough finding a job in the tree care industry but don't give up. Things will be picking up very soon once the busy season starts.

As far as education, there is a ton of books and info out there to learn from. If you wanted to take it even further you could try to go for college degree.

I don't know how old you are if if you'd be willing to travel but Job Corps also has an Arborist Apprenticeship program.

PM me and maybe we can work something out. I climb with another fella who is oldschool and another fella down in Canton who uses modern techniques as well as being a CA. Good fellas, good friends. Welcome to Arboristsite! Remember: start slow, stay low!

Ohio Woodland Job Corps. March 1st application. Start date June 21st. End December 17th. Training in all areas to tree care and forestry. Will get ODA pesticide lisence plus lots more. I think it's S/E ohio though. You could just live there and come back a pro.

Thank You. Have you attended this program?
