where i work, our farm has a custom made one that mounts on a 60 hp skid loader. with a 3-5 inch round ram with a 30 inch stroke. kinda hard to steal that. it mounts on to pallet forks to haul around. sure beats any 5-8 horse toy splitter.

some of you may remember a while back when i made a post of the splitter i built. well came home from cutting wood this last sat and splitter was gone... so i sit with a full truck load of rounds that need split but no splitter, to make it worce. i am going to hardly get any insurence money for it. Even if i wanted to buy a splitter it will bever be good enough as the one i made for my self. heres a pic of the splitter.
Had a saw stolen last summer, not near the bucks you lost but I know how you feel.
Hope you get it back.

As I was reading this thread last night, my splitter was sitting 25 feet from the street. I went out and chained it to my camper and locked the garage. At least they'll have to work a little for it. The night before, I came home and the dome light was on in a car I have sitting in the street unlocked. It is a POS that I am trading for a trailer. I don't know what they did to it, but I can't get the dome light to shut off so I had to pull the fuse. It is locked now also.

Growing up in a small town can make you develop some bad habits for living in larger towns and small towns aren't safe anymore either.

i agree with you %100 on growing up in a small town and also about them not being safe any more. my home town got hit up by 2 guys a few weeks ago. broke in to 13houses-garages. i find that really sad and im only 23 and feel that way. i cant even think what the old timers of my home town feel.

Sorry to hear about the splitter.

I like pintle's because they're a little tougher to steal.

With your fabrication skills, I'm sure you could weld up something like this but a little sturdier.

The vertical piece should fit snug inside the lunette, like maybe a piece of square tube around it. The "U" shaped piece should be a piece of pipe, it would be better for keeping out bolt cutters.

Chow,
I like it!! I run a Pintle on just about everything cuz ball hitches are too sissified to put up with a proper beating.

Problem is though, when ya thnk about it, what are ya gonna do when you want to move the splitter and forgot the key?

Simple. Wrap the tongue with a chain, bind it off to the truck and pull it.
Same way it's gonna get stolen by some jackass who knows what a splitter is.

I gotta figure out a way to anchor mine or start putting it in the barn.

Stay safe!

I agree with a previous poster that you should really take a wheel off or something. When I borrow my dad's splitter we wheel it up into the truck bed and strap it down, so it doesn't matter that my dad locks the hitch.

Anyone with a pickup and a couple planks can probably steal a splitter that's not chained to something heavy.

After all this discussion about stolen splitters, I took the wheels off mine and locked them in the garage. Since it probably weighs 1000 lb. somebody's going to get a hernia. (Or maybe I'm just encouraging them to break into the garage.).

Damn that sure does make me mad...hope you can recover it mx. The law is a joke anymore ...no one fears any consequence.

Mx_Racer..sorry to hear about the loss. If only you lived closer to the nw then i would be more then happy to bring my splittor over to help out. The 1 thing about insurance is that some things cant be replaced. Parents place they do have some old rifles up on the wall that they gotten when they were kids and like to have them displayed. No way they can be replaced, or all the tools we have. I took the time and $$ installing my own video security system that records entry into both doors and also the entry way inside and outside, and also being recorded from 3 different directions outside when people show up in the driveway or by the shop. Everything gets recorded to a pc hidden down in a basement thats locked up and out of site. When the chickens run across the yard its on live video. I plan on adding more cameras later on when ever i can pick them up used from ebay.

Get one to record and timestamp license plates in the driveway.

The software i use is free from Trendnet. The majority of the cameras i use are tv-ip100 and tv-ip201. All outdated cameras but for the price and reliability i havent had 1 fail for over a year now even when purchased used. All of these cameras use a cat5 connection so wiring is a must. Also you do need a very decent pc (cpu/ram/500Gb hardrive or bigger) to run more then 3 cameras decently. When motion is detected, say a chicken is getting ran down by 3 other roosters and action is going on .. its all recorded untill the motion stops. (ok bad representation.. but it does happen) When someone pulls into the driveway the front of the vehicle, and the back and also the sides is all recorded to video. The person getting out and walking up to the front door, regardless if its my house 180ft away from the parents barn, it's all recorded becouse of the multiple camera locations. If SOMETHING does happen and i need to get the video to the police, just simple as dropping the file onto a cd and burning it and giving it to them. (if i need to get nasty i can host the video with the perps face on the internet) I do have a wireless camera and also been experimenting in point to point ethernet bridge on my network but thats more complicated in explaining on how that works.

The thieves couldn't figure out a way to steal my neighbors off his woodlot, so they took the motor and the pump instead.

What would the person that stole it say if you asked him how he would feel if someone stole something of equal value of his? What would he do or want done to the thieves?

I have zero tolerance for thieves and that goes all the way up to corperate thieves.

Obviously the current penal system isn't enough of a deterrant, we need to up the punishment or type of punishment until people start to fear it. Then and only then will things start to change.

Seems crazy you guys live in the suburbs and people still steal your stuff! I guess crime is really nationwide even out in the country...cant trust your neighbors who else would know what stuff you have?
