Sears G-44 Gear Drive Saw

Hi, first time poster here. Got wind of this site from some folks over at ********** and thought you'd be the guys to direct my saw questions to.

I had this saw given to me about 25 years ago. It came from a summer camp my mom used to direct. The old caretaker used this to cut about 25 cord/yr but they finally broke down and got him a new saw.

I tried to fire it up back then, but I got a small Stihl since this thing weighs nearly 20 pounds with the 17" bar and chain. I tore down my old shed this spring and found I still had it on the shelf, so I thought I'd find out more about it before I decided to toss it in the metal scrap bin at the recyclers.

Ha, ha! Must be at least worth fixin' up I take it?

It takes a lot for me to take any tool and chuck it. It's been sitting around for all these years because every time I think of scrapping it, I think, "Hell... it ain't eating much just sitting there."

Maybe I'll try cleaning it up putting a new plug in it. The tag says it takes 1/2 pint 30W to a gallon of gas. 16:1. Guess no need for synthetics in this baby.

Best I could find is that it may be a David Bradley and have a 4.4 cu.in. engine?

This saw was made by Roper for Sears. Lots of info on here. As for the value....worth more for sentimental reasons than lucritive ones. Neat old saws though.

Never scrap old saws. Sell or give them to somebody that will appreciate them. Don't part them out for fleabay $$$ if they're anywhere near complete/salvageable either.............but that's another rant...:censored:

Why do that when you could send it to Virginia for half the postage? Besides, I have a D44 here that can keep it company. Who would want to prevent a family reunion?

I just thought I'd come back to this old thread. Mr. Battenkiller is a man true to his word. This saw did, indeed leave his place intact. I will be going through it this winter, and it will be well loved and displayed next to the Mac15 and the Super250 for a nice ketchup and mustard effect.

I did make a beg for the manual/IPL on this, but haven't received a response yet. I'm still searching through the sears site, I know they sometimes have manuals or at least IPLs there. haven't been lucky enough to find anything yet.

This saw is very complete, but a little dirty. I think it will look very nice when cleaned up. I think it's got carb issues, no fuel is making it to the cylinder, but all I did was put gas in it and pull for a few minutes, then pulled the plug. compression "feels" ok, but I know how that goes. I haven't pulled the muffler yet.

Anyway, if anyone has any leads on parts, manuals, or anything that can help me get through this saw, i'd love the help!
