on my faithful old (recently rebuilt powerhead) Stihl 090.
It would appear to me that the fuel load in the combustion chamber can raise the compression to the point where, while trying to pull-start, it kicks back, ripping the handle out of your hand. Note that this is with the decompression button depressed.
This is rather an intractable issue as even the experts here in NZ couldn't offer me a solution.
I found this site while searching for help and advice on square (chisel bit) filing chain saw cutters. BTW the local (New Zealand) experts from Stihl found advice originally for me in the Oregon saw chain manual. Some deep thread drilling in your forums confirmed that I should persist and so I did.
Also an amazing old thread on this site about felling Redwoods explained what a very old (40's or 50's?) Mercury chain saw with a 32 foot bar that an old friend of mine had might have been originally for.
