stihl 084 air filter upgrade

can early stihl 084av airfilter system be upgraded to the later 084 ?

yes but the backing plate is getting close to being like searching for hens teeth. i wish the aftermarket campanies would copy them. alot of 084's to switch out there so a run of 50 or 100 something like that would sell for sure.

so whats needed is backing plate from a later 084 and that fits the older 084 tank?

yep, the original plate also has the push button for the oiler attached to the filter cover while the newer setup has the button a part of the filter backing plate. so you need the backing plate and filter cover. the screws to hold the backing plate to the carb are rare but easy to make out of old 028 air filter nuts i believe i used last. then any HD style filter from stihl will work.
